The University of Derby has recently been involved with a project alongside the BBC2 programme Stargazing Live, BBC Learning and The Open University. The project recreated one of the world?s most famous telescopes, astronomer William Herschel?s 20ft long rotating telescope.

?The telescope will be based at our University?s Markeaton Street Campus where a majority of our Engineering courses are held and will remain at the campus upon its completion. Professor Huw Davies, the Dean of the University?s Art, Design and Technology Faculty, said that ?This is a very exciting and high profile project for the University of Derby to be involved in.?

?The Professor also added ?Engineering has a strong presence in Derby and at the University and I?m sure that our students will get a real buzz out of something like this happening right on their doorstep.? As well as the University of Derby supporting the project by part funding the base for the telescope, students from our School of Technology are involved with the project working alongside consultants from University College London.

?This is one of many times students from the University of Derby have assisted with a project. In 2011 students from our Motorsport Engineering courses worked with the Derbyshire Fire Service to build a transformer car to aid the fire service in their training. The project was successful and you can see the car in action in this video about the project.

?Many of our Engineering courses are accredited by various professional bodies, for example our Motorsport Engineering BEng (Hons) course is accredited by the IMECHE and Engineering Council. Students will also be studying their course in excellent facilities equipped with the latest technology.

?For further information about starting at the University of Derby, contact one of our student advisors using this form. We look forward to hearing from you.

?For more information, prospective students can visit the ?How to Apply? section ?of our website, contact the international team , or book a Skype appointment to talk with a counsellor.
