Asia Cup 2012 ? An amazing start for India

Asia Cup 2012 held in Bangladesh is the 11th edition of the tournament. China was very much interested to host the Asia Cup at Guangzhou, but the Asian Cricket Council decided that Bangladesh will host the event, which is the third time for them, where they have hosted earlier in 1988 and 2000. This event is currently being played from 11th March to 22nd March 2012, which was rescheduled from 1st March 2012. It has been rescheduled for avoiding the conflict with the ODI tri-series in Australia that also included Sri Lanka and India, which ended-up on March 8. This tournament features the four Test-playing nations from Asia including, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. India is the defending 2010 Asia Cup Champion.

The points system of the Asia Cup 2012 is as follows;

  • Win - 4 points
  • Loss ? No Points
  • Tie/No result: 2 points
  • Bonus point: If a team wins, with a run rate ? 1.25 times that of the opposing team, the winning team gets 1 bonus point.

Rules for the team to qualify for the final, if there is any tie in points between two or more teams,

  1. The team having the higher number of wins
  2. If a tie in number of wins between two or more teams, the team with more wins against the other teams who have equal number of points and wins
  3. If still equal, the team with the higher number of bonus points
  4. If still equal, the team with the greater net run rate

Tendulkar becomes the first batsman to score the 100th international century, getting to the milestone against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla stadium in Mirpur at around 5:05pm local time on March 16, 2012.

It ended up to a year-long wait in the cricket history, and this was his first ODI hundred against the Bangladesh team, completing his set of centuries against every Full Member country in both Tests and ODIs. The 100th century was made in the 44th over with a nudge behind square leg, one of his lucky strokes to reach a century. Despite the huge amount of hype surrounding the landmark, there was no extraordinary celebration. Asia Cup 2012 was a great win for India with the Tendulkar-Raina partnership for the third wicket yielding 86 runs in a 10.5 overs and Mahendra Singh Dhoni blasting a couple boundaries to take India past 280.

London Hideaways Talk About Tea! by Katia Provencher ? Food ...

There is nothing more quintessentially English than a good cup of tea. In fact, along with bulldogs, bowler hats and red telephone boxes, tea drinking has come to symbolize the very essence of the British experience. When traveling to London you may want to indulge yourself in this genteel ritual, London Hideaways has a few tips to ensure that you will have a memorable tea drinking experience.

First a bit of history about the English Tea trade:

Tea came to Britain in the 16th century when Dutch merchants first imported this Asian beverage from China. The Chinese had been drinking tea for centuries (with limited supplies of clean water, boiling it with aromatic leaves was a good way to ensure a safe and tasty drink).

By the 17th century, tea drinking was in fashion throughout Europe and British entrepreneurs were quick to capitalize on the trend. The famous Twinings company established a warehouse in London in 1706 and is still in business today.

Twinings: London?s oldest Tea shop

The distinctive clipper ships are a product of the British tea trade. Built for speed, these sailing vessels would stock up on Chinese tea and race home to be the first with the new harvest.

The most famous clipper of all, the Cutty Sark, has been preserved and can be visited in Greenwich just east of London.

Fortnum and Mason is another institution which opened just a year after Twinings, in 1707, selling to the royal household and the local gentry. When in London, visit ?Fortnums?, as they are known, and see the liveried shop assistants.

In fact, one of London?s best-loved institutions also has it roots in the tea trade. In 1834, Henry Charles Harrod opened a tea wholesaler in the East End. Today Harrod?s in London?s Knightsbridge is one of the world?s most famous department stores.

The world?s taste for tea made many men rich and helped establish Britain as an international commercial powerhouse. And, of course, where there is money to be made there is money to be taxed: it was Britain?s taxation of tea in the 1700?s that helped fuel the American independence movement!

English tea times:

In Britain there are different tea drinking occasions associated with different times of day.

For instance, elevenses is a morning tea comparable to a coffee break. Low tea is an afternoon meal that may include sandwiches and scones (the name originates from the habit of enjoying the meal in low armchairs!) The famous English cream tea may feature scones and clotted cream, marmalade and lemon curd. Royale Tea is a social occasion that includes champagne or sherry served before the tea. Perhaps the most well known tea drinking occasion High Tea. It started as an evening meal for laborers and typically might include meat and potatoes (really more of a dinner than tea). These days, you may enjoy High Tea at two in the afternoon. It is a fairly elaborate meal with cake, biscuits and pastries.

Tea etiquette:

Mostly followed during Victorian days, it still has its importance in some Etiquette and English Schools and circles, here are a few light hearted tips.

London?s Ritz serves one of the best London Afternoon tea

When sitting down to tea, place your purse on your lap or behind you on the back of your chair. Unfold your napkin and place it in your lap (should you need to leave the table, place your napkin on your chair). Put sugar in your cup first, then a lemon slice if you wish. Milk goes in after the tea is poured. Lemon and milk are never used together and cream is never added to tea. Do not stir in a circular motion ? gently move the tea back and forth with your spoon. Never leave your spoon in your teacup ? leave it on the saucer behind the cup. Split scones horizontally with your knife and add cream and lemon curds to you plate. Spread the cream and curds on your scone before each bite.

It is a misconception that polite tea drinkers extend their little fingers when holding a cup (although it is a good practice to handle food with only three fingers).

Enjoying tea in London

First be aware that no self-respecting tearoom will use tea bags, always loose leaves.

When in London you may want to indulge in the tradition of tea at the Ritz ? the world famous hotel that overlooks Green Park and Buckingham Palace in the distance. It gained popularity in English society in the early 20th century as a place where ladies could enjoy a meal without a chaperone. These days the Ritz welcomes everybody. The tea sandwiches and cakes are world famous!

Served in the spectacular Palm Court, Ritz Traditional Afternoon Tea offers a choice of several varieties of tea, finely cut sandwiches, freshly baked scones, jam and clotted cream and a range of delicate pastries, combine to make for an unforgettable afternoon. Although there are five sittings every day, booking at least twelve weeks in advance is absolutely essential, especially for weekend bookings. There is a formal dress code in its public areas. Ritz London

The English Tea Room of Brown?s Hotel in Albemarle Street, Mayfair serves an excellent Afternoon tea. This fine, traditional hotel was founded in 1837 by James Brown, butler to Lord Byron and his wife, who was Lady Byron?s maid. Their hotel quickly became a meeting place for the local nobility and today is frequented by a wide clientele carrying on the tradition of enjoying English afternoon tea.

Curious about tea?

When in London visit the Bramah Museum of Tea and Coffee, 1 Maguire Street, Butler?s Wharf

Syrian forces take eastern city from rebels

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian soldiers backed by tanks seized the eastern city of Deir el-Zour from rebels on Tuesday, the latest opposition stronghold to fall to an offensive by the better equipped Syrian military.

Activist Osama Mansour said government troops and armored cars entered the city about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Iraqi border from four sides, sparking short gunbattles with fighters from the Free Syrian Army.

Mansour, reached by telephone in Deir el-Zour, said the rebels quit fighting and took shelter in homes and apartments, fearing that protracted clashes would destroy the city.

Taking back rebel-held cities in the past weeks, government troops have often heavily shelled neighborhoods before sending in troops, killing civilians and damaging buildings.

"They knew they could not hold control of the neighborhoods, so they decided to stop fighting, knowing that the regime would bring in heavy weapons and kill many civilians," Mansour said.

The rebels also lacked guns and ammunition, he said.

Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on an activist network in Syria, said the rebels faced little resistance when they took the city a few days ago. But over the past three days, regime forces attacked some of their hideouts in the Omal neighborhood, killing more than 25 fighters. Mansour said 15 rebel were killed in recent days.

On Tuesday, government forces rolled into the rest of the neighborhoods.

No one was killed in Tuesday's clashes, both activists said.

Activist groups reported heavy shelling in the central city of Homs Tuesday, as well as shelling and gunfire elsewhere in the province.

The Observatory said 31 civilians were killed across Syria, 21 of them in Homs. Another group, the Local Coordination Committees, put the day's death toll at 42, 20 of them in Homs.

The uprising against Assad started one year ago. His security forces quickly cracked down on dissent, attacking protesters with tanks, snipers and pro-regime thugs.

The conflict has grown more militarized as many in the opposition have taken up arms to protect their towns and attack regime forces.

But the loose-knit Free Syrian Army is overwhelmingly outgunned by Assad's forces and has proven unable to control territory.

Assad has justified the crackdown by saying terrorists and foreign extremists are driving the revolt.

The U.N. says more than 8,000 people have been killed, many of them unarmed protesters.

The Syrian government has barred most media from working in the country, and activist claims could not be independently verified.

Also Tuesday, Human Rights Watch accused some in Syria's armed opposition of serious abuses, including kidnapping and torturing security forces.

In a letter to the opposition Syrian National Council, the group called on opposition leader to condemn all abuses but said many of those responsible are not under a clear command structure.

SNC leaders did not respond to requests for comment.

The Assad regime has faced mounting international criticism, but diplomacy has failed to stop the bloodshed.

The U.S., Europe and many Asian countries have called on Assad to step down, but Russia and China have protected him from censure by the U.N. Security Council.

Joint U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has been trying to broker a cease-fire, but apparently made little progress during recent meetings with Assad in Damascus.

Russia said Tuesday it is ready to support a U.N. resolution endorsing Kofi Annan's plan to end the crisis ? a sign of impatience with Russia's closest Arab ally.

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the resolution shouldn't turn into an ultimatum to the Syrian government, setting the stage for tough bargaining over the document at the Security Council.

Annan met with Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby in Paris Tuesday to discuss steps to achieve a cease-fire and ways to monitor its implementation.

Hyaluronic Acid HA Powder Anti-Aging Make Serum 5gm ? Fitness ...

Hyaluronic Acid Pure Powder 30 grams Food Grade for internal and External USE White Powder 96.50% Pure Sodium Hyaluronic Acid -Food Grade For Internal or External Use Yours will come sealed in a re-sealable bag. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a polysaccharide and a compound that occurs naturally in every tissue of the body, with the highest concentrations occurring in tissues such as skin, cartilage and eyes. Providing protection to cell structures, HA is the natural gel between skin cells that serves as a water reservoir for the cells. As we age, skin loses hyaluronic acid and the ability to hold sufficient water in this reservoir. Feeding new hyaluronic acid to skin may help hydrate skin?s intercellular reservoir, raising skin?s moisture level, and smoothing down age lines. Topically, Hyaluronic Acid has water storing properties, making it an ideal swelling agent and lubricant, enabling its incorporation into cosmetics leading to a perceptible and visible improvement of skin condition. In use, it forms a thin transparent visco elastic surface film that helps to preserve the characteristics of youthful and healthy skin: suppleness, elasticity and tone. Enhances suppleness and elasticity Adds cosmetic appeal to the skin Promotes firm, radiant, even-toned skin Maintains skin?s natural beauty It functions as an antioxidant Preserves the integrity of the skin Creates a healthy, youthful complexion Provides deep moisture for a natural glow Acts like an ?instant facelift? Provides structure, texture and tone Dear herb-supply-house, I just received your 30 gram bag of pure Hyaluronic Acid Powder. I am so excited! Can you please tell me how to measure out the Powder? I understand that 1 gram is enough to make 4 oz of serum but how do I measure out 1 gram? I looked on the internet but it says that grams do not measure volume, only weight (which is really bad because we sell mineral makeup in 10 gram jars and it doesn?t hold 10 grams of minerals). How do you determine how much to put in each bag? Can you tell me what the volume of 1 gram is? Is there an equivalent? Like 1/4 teaspoon? I want to try mixing 4 ounces of Hyaluronic Acid Serum. How much HA powder would I mix with 4 ounces of water? I am dying to make my own serum but don?t want to waste any of this precious powder! Thank you so much! Colleen I make a serum with a pinch of HA (like 1/8th teaspoon (don?t actually measure it) to 2 oz (or so) of water and shake well. Put in fridge. Shake again. Turns into a thick gel. I keep it on bathroom counter. It?s just enough to last about 6-7 days. I put the hyaluronic acid gel on face and neck (and other places like breasts) right after my shower. I let dry a bit, then put lots of cream all over the top of it and let that dry. Whatever doesn?t dry, I pat off. I use a thick cream like with shea butter on the dry areas like under the eyes and around lips. If you have oily areas, I?d put a lighter cream. But, if you don?t use a cream, the HA dries and feels like you have egg whites on your face. (A tightness feel). Seems to make my face plump up and make it soft. It works better the longer you use it. You can vary the thickness of your gel by putting more or less HA powder in the water. You can also add the gel directly into the lotion. But, I like the gel by itself because I can put it near my eyes and all over my lips because it?s ok to get it near your eyes and mouth as it won?t burn. Hyaluronic Acid is used in eyedrops in small amounts and this particular Hyaluronic Acid is internal use so it won?t hurt you. It is not cut with vitamin C. I make small amounts so it will not go bad or get contaminated and then I throw it away and make it again. I make dmae ?toner? to use at night. But, to answer your question. I used my scale, 1/4 teaspoon weighs .3 grams (300mg). 1/2 teaspoon weighs .6 grams (600mg). A whole level teaspoon weighs 1.2 grams (1200mg). Hope this helps. Carrie Stoafer Herb Supply House 702-677-6147 More info: Because of its tremendous capacity to hold water, adding this active to your creams, lotions, gels or serums will help keep skin moist. Also, hyaluronidase in the skin will break this active down and the sugars released will be used to make new Hyaluronic Acid in our dermis. A truly great active ingredient! Hyaluronic Acid can also be added to any cream, gel or lotion to thicken a mixture. Add a pinch of powder to a small amount of cold, filtered or distilled water, shake well, put in refrigerator. Let it absorb and form a gel, then mix into the desired product. Keep Hyaluronic Acid in its sealed container, in a cool dry place, until ready to use. Be careful when using in a cream or other mixture as it is tricky to get the quantities correct, and using too much may spoil a cream. Food Grade internal use: An example only: 9 grams sea salt and 500 mg of sodium hyaluronic acid in 500 cc distilled water. It works in nearly all cases of spinal degeneration You should see significant improvement in a day. You store or refrigerate unused portion and should last a month. Don?t use vitamin c in the mix as it decomposes the mix. When dissolving this can be done using cool water such as 75 F. Then shake to dissolve the mix and keep in refrigerator. Kept overnight and shake anytime then is ready for use. If you can?t weigh it try 1 full teaspoon to 1 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt. The formula goes bad after 1 month. The Sea salt is a preservative and carrier for the hyaluronic acid. Yes it is somewhat of a miracle as it allows the damaged cartilage to regenerate. This is a more watery formula for ingestion and does not make a thick serum for the face. Please do your own research into mixing HA. Herb Supply House is not responsible for the outcome of your mixtures. Please do not inject this into your face. This is a supplement for internal use as well as for topical use. HA is a polysaccharide which is a small molecular weight that can penetrate into the dermis layer, fully combine with water which promotes hydration, nutrient absorbtion and blood circulation! It can be used in water-based (not fat-based) creams, water based shampoos, lotions, etc. *KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN* INCI: Sodium Hyaluronate Suggested Usage Rate: up to 2% on skin Solubility: water To make a basic Hyaluronic Serum, just mix 0.5g of HA to 30ml of cold liquid. The liquid can be water, or mix of water/glycerin/hydrosol. Keep in refrigerator. Shake frequently. INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT INCLUDED Herb Supply house is not responsible for the outcome of your mixture. OLCC grants first-ever annual liquor license to food carts at ...

"Cartlandia," a collection of food carts on Portland's Southeast 82nd Avenue, will soon begin serving beer and wine after the Oregon Liquor Control Commission granted it an annual license Friday -- a first for the agency.

Commissioners approved the license unanimously over a chorus of objections from police and city officials who worried about setting a new precedent for alcohol sales at food carts, and about increased enforcement issues that arise when drinks are served.

?"Our concern is simply that it will open the floodgates and create a public safety problem that we're not equipped to address," said Eric Hendricks, assistant chief of the Portland Police Bureau. The department budget already is stretched thin and the ranks of officers may continue to decline, Hendricks said.

Granting liquor licenses to food carts will only make it tougher to enforce complaints of disorderly conduct and other behaviors that come along with serving alcohol.

Liquor officials dismissed those concerns, and said they were more interested in helping out small businesses that provide a service to the neighborhood.

"In my mind, I see this like I sometimes see in downtown Bend -- a roped-off beer garden," said commission member Ron Roome, who is from Central Oregon. Roome said he felt comfortable approving the license after the owners of the property, Roger Goldingay and his wife Carol Otis, agreed to close it after 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends.

OLCC Chair Cassandra SkinnerLopata said the decision may set a new precedent for food carts, but she doesn't expect to see a flood of new approvals. Each applicant must get individual approval from the full commission, and most would not meet the requirements, which include fencing, monitoring and other restrictions.

Goldingay told the commission that, despite police concerns about increased crime, the Cartlandia food carts have been a positive influence on the surrounding area. "We've done a tremendous amount of work on the property," he said. "We have cleaned up the neighborhood."

David Mepham: Can Business Uphold Children's Rights?

Despite a plethora of international initiatives on corporate social responsibility (CSR), none has focused exclusively on the impact of business on children's rights. This is a curious omission when children under 18 make up nearly a third of the global population, when the rights of millions of children across the world are routinely violated or denied, and when business practices have such wide-ranging effects on children. Human Rights Watch has been documenting violations of the rights of children for many years, including instances in which large international corporations have been linked to abuses, in places like Kazakhstan, Papua New Guinea and China.

This week's launch in London of the Children's Rights and Business Principles -- sponsored by UNICEF, Save the Children and the UN Global Compact, and with a large number of corporate representatives in attendance -- therefore offers a new approach. It has the potential to improve the protection and promotion of children's rights.

The principles themselves have some notable elements. They recognise and explicitly refer to existing international human rights law, specifically the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the relevant articles of the International Labour Organisation Convention on the worst forms of child labour. Unlike so much traditional CSR activity, the principles focus not on corporate philanthropy but rather on core business practices, something that Human Rights Watch has long advocated. The principles call on businesses to respect children's rights, "addressing any adverse human rights impact with which the business is involved," applying to the business' own activities and to "its business relationships, linked to its operations, products or services." In addition, they propose a corporate commitment to "support" children's rights, including through "strategic social investments... advocacy and public policy engagement," and by working in partnerships with others.

The principles also recognise that action to safeguard the rights of children goes far wider than the issue of child labour. Amongst the 10 principles set out in the initiative, there is a call on business to ensure that their products and services are safe, that marketing and advertising strategies respect and support children's rights, that children's rights are upheld and advanced in relation to the environment and land acquisition, and that businesses should pay particular attention to safeguarding children in emergency situations, when they tend to be more vulnerable to sexual and other forms of abuse.

While these elements of the initiative are positive, it is less clear how the principles will be translated into substantive changes in corporate behaviour. The UN Global Compact, one of the three sponsors of this initiative, has suffered since its inception from the lack of any enforcement mechanism. The new Children's Rights and Business Principles seem to be cut from the same cloth. The document talks about human rights due diligence; it calls on business to assess its actual and potential human rights impact, and then to integrate and act on its findings. But there is no requirement on those participating companies to submit to independent monitoring, and there are no penalties proposed for any company that endorses the principles but then acts in ways that contradict them.

At the opening event, the sponsors of the initiative put great emphasis on voluntary action and "the business case" for giving greater priority to children's rights. There is indeed such a case. But if advancing children's rights is so self-evidently and naturally consistent with businesses' interests in growth and profit, there would presumably be fewer instances of corporate involvement in human rights abuses. The Children's Rights and Business Principles are themselves an acknowledgement that corporate behaviour can sometimes be harmful, and that action is needed to prevent harm and promote good practice.

Human Rights Watch's own research on business and human rights and on children's rights suggests that voluntary action and pressure by nongovernmental organizations and the media -- while essential -- will often be insufficient to address the most serious abuses. Our recent work on artisanal (or small-scale) gold mining in Mali is a case in point. It has been estimated that between 20,000 and 40,000 children work in Mali's artisanal gold mining sector. Many of them start working as young as age 6. These child miners are exposed to mercury, a highly toxic substance, when they mix gold with mercury and then burn the amalgam to separate out the gold. Mercury poisoning from this work leads to a range of neurological conditions, including tremors, coordination problems, vision impairment, severe headaches and memory loss. Many of the children involved in gold mining also miss out on school.

Human Rights Watch's research shows that, with some exceptions, Malian and international gold companies involved with artisanal gold mining in Mali have not done enough to address the issue of child labour and other abuses in the supply chain. We are urging the Malian government to take concrete policy and legislative steps to end the use of mercury by children working in artisanal mining. We are also urging governments and international business involved in this sector to support a strong global treaty on mercury: one that requires governments to implement mandatory action plans for mercury reduction in artisanal gold mining.

The Children's Rights and Business Principles are a significant development. They provide useful guidance to companies on how to minimise or prevent harmful impacts on children from their operations and how to enhance the positive impacts. But experience suggests that they will need to be matched by sustained public, civil society and media scrutiny of corporate practice, alongside appropriate political and legal reforms, if they are to deliver real and lasting change to children around the world.

Angolan activist testifies in 'blood diamonds' hearing

Angolan anti-graft campaigner Rafael Marques testified Wednesday to prosecutors investigating his claims that seven generals committed crimes against humanity in the country's diamond fields.

Marques, also an author, has accused the generals of being behind torture and killings committed by soldiers as well as by private security forces hired to protect diamond concessions in the northeastern Lundas region.

He has singled out the Cuango Mining Society, a consortium that includes a company called Lumanhe, in which he says the generals have a stake.

"I left satisfied with the hearing because it was conducted impartially enough," Marques told AFP after giving four hours of testimony to deputy attorney general Domingos Salvador Andre Baxe.

"I felt that the deputy attorney general was understanding and open, to conduct the investigation for the better," he added.

"The victims are already interacting directly with the attorney general, the accused are doing the same. We'll then see the contradictions that come up in the depositions," Marques said.

Once the investigation is complete, prosecutors will decide whether to bring the case to trial.

Marques filed the complaint against the generals on November 14, 2011. Hearings began on March 5, and Marques said four of the 10 victims named in the case had given testimony.

Marques has denounced abuses in Lundas since 2004, especially in the towns of Cuango and Xa-Muteba. His most recent book, "Blood Diamonds: Corruption and Tortue in Angola", was published in September.

His research for the book forms the basis of his criminal complaint.

HBO suspends filming with horses on 'Luck' drama

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A horse was injured and euthanized Tuesday during production of the cable television racetrack drama "Luck," the third death in connection with the series, and HBO agreed to suspend filming with horses while the accident is investigated.

The humane group that oversees Hollywood productions had issued an immediate demand "that all production involving horses shut down."

"We are also insisting that this stoppage remain in full effect pending a complete, thorough, and comprehensive investigation," the American Humane Association said in a statement. It noted that the accident didn't occur during filming or racing.

The animal was being led to a Santa Anita Park racetrack stable by a groom when it reared and fell back Tuesday morning, suffering a head injury, according to HBO. The horse was euthanized at the track in suburban Arcadia, where "Luck" is filming its second season.

In the series, which was created by David Milch ("Deadwood," ''NYPD Blue") and looks at racing's seedier side, Dustin Hoffman plays a crime kingpin who's scheming to gain control of a racetrack and introduce casino gambling.

During season-one filming in 2010 and 2011, two horses were hurt during racing scenes and euthanized. HBO defended its treatment of the animals, saying it's worked with the American Humane Association and racing industry experts to implement safety protocols that exceed film and TV industry standards.

The American Humane Association's film and TV unit, the group sanctioned and supported by the entertainment industry to protect animals used in filming, called for a production halt at the Santa Anita Racetrack after the second horse's death.

Racing resumed after new protocols were put in place and proved effective, Karen Rosa, the AHA unit's senior vice president, said in February.

On Tuesday, Dr. Gary Beck, a California Horse Racing Board veterinarian, said he had just examined the horse as part of routine health and safety procedures before it was to race later in the day. The horse passed the inspection, the AHA said.

"The horse was on her way back to the stall when she reared, flipped over backwards, and struck her head on the ground," Beck said in a statement. An attending veterinarian determined that euthanasia was appropriate, he said.

Dr. Rick Arthur, medical director of the state racing board, said such injuries occur in stable areas every year and are more common than thought. A necropsy will be conducted, he said, which is routine with all fatalities at racing board enclosures.

An American Humane Association safety representative was at the track when the accident occurred and "as always, all safety precautions were in place," HBO said in its statement that said it was "deeply saddened" by the horse's death and was working with the AHA on its inquiry.

The first two horse deaths drew criticism from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which said that safety guidelines used in filming failed to prevent the deaths "so clearly they were inadequate."

Kathy Guillermo, a PETA vice president, said at the time the group didn't consider the matter closed.

"Racing itself is dangerous enough. This is a fictional representation of something and horses are still dying, and that to me is outrageous," she said.

On Tuesday, Guillermo said PETA sent complaints about "Luck" to Arcadia police and an animal humane society in nearby Pasadena.

"Three horses have now died and all the evidence we have gathered points to sloppy oversight, the use of unfit, injured horses, and disregard for the treatment of thoroughbreds," Guillermo said, calling for an immediate halt to filming.

Latin America's Moment ? Investing in Latin America

I just came back from speaking on a panel, on Brazil and Latin America more broadly, at a conference for institutional investors. We five panelists came from research, investing, and on-the-ground business backgrounds, providing a variety of perspectives and interesting conversation.? Overall three big themes emerged in our discussion:

Brazil still holds the top spot in investor thinking, with the majority of our time focused on its prospects. But though most were positive on the country, they were less so on the investment opportunities. The main challenge is that so many portfolio, pension, and private equity investors ? both foreign and domestic ? have poured into Brazil?s markets that bargains are few. Instead, those actively investing are looking to Mexico, Colombia, and Peru ?markets with good fundamentals but less competition. Some saw potential in the ?smaller cap? space (U.S. $25-50 million investments), but these more ?under the radar? discoveries require deep personal (and often political) ties on the ground. What all see are well-known international companies and brands (particularly in the tech space) scouting out Brazil, considering direct investments and/or locating facilities there to spread their global base and gain access to the growing local market.

A second theme was Latin America?s rising consumers, a group that has grown by at least 70 million in less than a decade. Whether in Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, or elsewhere, this phenomenon is seen as a big strength not just for future growth but also vis-?-vis other emerging economies such as China.

Finally, there was more optimism about the United States than I had heard in a while. The general feeling was that the economy has turned a corner and, though perhaps slow, it is moving forward. For the long term most were quite bullish, in part due to the perceived ability of U.S. corporations to grow and innovate abroad (in places such as Brazil and its neighbors), bringing benefits both here and there.

Mexico's Carlos Slim to back internet TV network

Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim is financing an internet TV network that will include an interview show with former television host Larry King, according to network's website.

The network, which will be called Ora.tv, will feature on-demand content and will produce "a wide range of programs that transcend traditional formats," the website said.

Slim's America Movil, one of the world's biggest telecommunications firms, will fund the station that will be led by Jon Housman, who was formerly the president of digital journalism at Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, Ora.tv's website said.

Reuters reported in January that Slim, whom Forbes says is the world's richest man, and King were in talks to start a media venture.

Slim is the main provider of pay-television in Latin America, where he offers cable and satellite services to around 13 million customers, and he also owns a stake in the New York Times Co.

Ora.tv will be launched this year but it does not have a start date yet.

Apple to add 3,600 jobs at new $304M Texas campus

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Apple Inc. is investing $304 million in a new campus and more than doubling its workforce in the Texas capital, boosted by a $21 million incentive from a state fund designed to attract high-tech companies, Gov. Rick Perry said Friday.

The investment from the Texas Enterprise Fund comes in exchange for a promise that Apple will add more than 3,600 employees at its new facility in Austin over the next decade, including customer support, sales and accounting staff, Perry said.

"Investments like this further Texas' potential to become the nation's next high-tech hub," the governor said in a statement.

Already the world's most valuable company, Apple's market capitalization topped $500 billion this month and remains above that mark - rarefied air that only a few firms, including rival Microsoft and Exxon Mobil Corp, have ever exceeded.

"Our operations in Austin have grown dramatically over the past decade, from less than 1,000 employees in 2004 to more than 3,500 today," said Steve Dowling, a spokesman for the Cupertino, Calif., company.

This week, Apple unveiled its new iPad, featuring a sharper screen and faster processing chip, though the added features mean the tablet computer is slightly thicker and heavier than its predecessor, iPad 2.

The enterprise fund is one of two designed to entice technology companies and top researchers to Texas. Perry said the payout to Apple is one of the largest and the company's job pledge one of the most ambitious since the fund was created in 2003. He said the fund has invested more than $443.4 million and signed contracts to generate 62,000 new jobs and more than $15.4 billion in capital investment.

Tea party activists and other critics of using state money to attract private enterprise call the fund an example of "crony capitalism," complaining that it funnels taxpayer dollars to politically connected firms with little guarantee of job creation. The governor's office says that companies failing to meet job targets can renegotiate the terms of their deals with the state, but must pay penalties known as "claw backs."

A report in November by the political watchdog group Texans for Public Justice found that companies receiving money from the Texas Enterprise Fund created 22,349 jobs by the end of 2010, or roughly 37 percent of the 59,100 jobs that the governor's office said the participating firms had promised to create as of summer 2010.

Perry's office said it only measures the fund's cumulative results - not year by year or contract by contract, since the terms of individual deals change as they are renegotiated. Under that measure, grant recipients promised to create 23,410 jobs by the end of 2010 and exceeded expectations by delivering 33,400.

What Makes Our Chincoteague B and B Special | Chincoteage Bed ...

We travel for many reasons. We travel for work and to visit far-flung relations. We travel to see new places and have different experiences. We travel to broaden our minds.

Chincoteague Island Bed and Breakfast has bikes for guests.

Ride our bikes out to the beach.

Travel can do all of these things. It can also challenge our assumptions and our comfort levels. This is especially true when we travel to extremely remote places, where the luxury of hot water isn?t guaranteed and where roads sometimes peter out into paths. In such instances, travel becomes adventure, and the only thing we can expect is the unexpected.

Adventures are wonderful, and we hope everyone has at least one good adventure in a lifetime.

Yet most of the time, what most of us want when we travel is to be pampered.

One reason travelers choose to stay in our Chincoteague Island Bed and Breakfast is because we pamper them. We do everything we can to help your stay with us be relaxing and refreshing. From the moment you enter our door, you are our guest. We take that seriously.

Your room is your castle, but the rest of the inn is open to you, as well. Our library has an extensive collection of books for you to read during your stay, and we have many fun board games. There are two fireplaces in common areas, so on chilly evenings, you will always find warmth. A guest refrigerator is kept well stocked with cold beverages, and tea, coffee, and filtered water is always available. We also keep some tasty treats around for when you get the nibbles.

Organizing expeditions can be one of the most exasperating aspects of travel. You know you want to have a scenic boat tour around Chincoteague and Assateague Islands, so you can see the wild ponies, but you don?t quite know where to go for that. Our Concierge Service will happily make the arrangements for you. We?ll also book fishing tours, nature tours, jet skis, canoes and kayaks, and parasailing adventures. When hunger strikes, we?ll recommend restaurants and make the reservations.

It?s easier to pack for vacation if you don?t have to include beach umbrellas, chairs, boogie boards, frisbees, and buckets. With that thought in mind, we supply beach gear for our guests. We even have bikes you can use, so you can pedal around the islands at your leisure.

We want guests of Miss Molly?s Chincoteague Island Bed and Breakfast to have maximum comfort with the minimum worry. That?s what hospitality is all about.

A year after disaster, Japan automakers are back, study ways to make production more resilient

TOKYO - Nissan is back. Just a year ago, an earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan ground the automaker's production to a halt, left giant cracks at a key factory and killed five employees and 17 family members.

It's a story of surprising recovery that's playing out at other Japanese automakers, but particularly at Nissan.

CEO Carlos Ghosn called it "miraculous" on Friday, ahead of the disaster's anniversary.

The maker of the March subcompact and the Infiniti luxury brands had record sales year of 4.67 million vehicles in 2011. That was up 14 per cent from the previous year.

But it's not all plain sailing for Japan Inc. and its automakers. Executives and analysts say they now have to get to grips with more perennial problems such as the strong yen.

ARTICLES MANIAC ? Your Guide For Proper Personal Finance ...

If you keep your money in order, it is much easier to make life-changing purchases like trips, cars, and houses. The following article provides you with some useful advice on how to effectively manage your personal finances.

Your expenses should be categorized. Split expenditures into two groups, one for set expenses, like rent or car payments, and one for those that can vary, like utility bills. Accomplishing this makes it much easier to hold to your budget. If you want to best meet your goals, paying attention to your expenses will help.

You might need these receipts later to compare against your credit card?s monthly statements in case a double charge or other error shows up.

A flexible expense account is an important thing to establish. You will save money since the income put into this account is nontaxable.

Instead of buying a lot of expensive Christmas presents, why not make your own by hand? You?ll stay out of department stores and save a ton of money. A little creative thinking can save you money that you can use to build your savings.

Opening a savings account can be very helpful in case of an emergency. In addition to saving for unforeseen occurrences, you can also save for anticipated events, such as going to college, buying a new car, or paying off the balance on a credit card.

Create a budget and follow it until you are able to dig yourself out of debt. Keep track of your budget using a notebook and pen or using specialized computer software, whichever is more comfortable for you. Anything you use to keep track of your budget will help you figure out where your money is going. Once you know what you?re spending money on, you can decide whether you want to cut any of it out. This type of planning helps you reduce spending and refrain from spending money you can?t afford on luxuries.

Look for a bank that offers free checking accounts if you do not already have one. Local banks, credit unions, and online banks are all likely to have free checking offers.

Read any mail that your credit card company sends you. They are required by law to contact you 45 days prior to any changes taking effect on your account. Read the disclosure of changes and see if the changes make it worth your while to maintain the account. If it?s not worth it, pay it in full and then close it.

Stay on top of your personal finances by making concrete plans for your financial future. Sticking to a set of objectives is a great way to stay on track and remain within your budget.

As this article has spelled out, proper money management affects every area of your life. Using these tips, you can move your life in a positive direction.

Save on the latest technology with e cigarette coupons.

Sony PlayStation Suite SDK public beta coming April

Android Central

Sony has announced that the software development kit for its PlayStation Suite will launch in public beta form from this April. The public release follows the closed beta of the SDK, which began in November 2011, and was open to a select few developers in the United States, the UK and Japan.

The kit allows game developers to create titles optimized for PlayStation-certified phones and tablets, like the Xperia Play and Tablet S, as well as Sony's recently-launched PlayStation Vita gaming system (and we'd expect the Vita angle alone to attract a fair few devs).

The public beta will be open to anyone and everyone, free of charge. However, the full version will set devs back $99 annually when it lands later in the year.

We've got the full press release from Sony after the break.

Liberal Congressman Kucinich defeated in Ohio

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - Dennis Kucinich, a colorful liberal in Congress who tried to have former President George W. Bush impeached over the Iraq war, was defeated by a fellow Democratic incumbent on Tuesday in the first of 11 primary races this year pitting members of the U.S. House against each other.

Kucinich, 65, lost to Marcy Kaptur, the longest serving woman in Congress, who touted her influence as a senior member of the powerful committee that decides on government spending.

In November, Kaptur will face the winner of the Republican primary -- Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, better known as "Joe the Plumber." He gained national attention in the 2008 presidential race by pressing then-candidate Barack Obama on tax policy.

Kaptur and Kucinich, once friends representing neighboring northern Ohio districts, found themselves competing for the same job when Ohio lost two Congressional seats after the 2010 U.S. Census.

The reshuffling of Ohio voting boundaries by the Republican-dominated state legislature created an oddly-shaped district that stretches along the Lake Erie shore from Toledo to just east of Cleveland, forcing a primary race between the two.

While most attention focused on the Super Tuesday Republican presidential primaries, Ohio also held primary elections for a U.S. Senate seat, all of its members of Congress and local posts.

In the primary on Tuesday, Kaptur won nearly all the vote from her home area of Toledo, and Kucinich was unable to close the gap with votes in his Cleveland base.

"I'll continue to serve the entire region with the same vigor I have served the people of Lucas County (Toledo) for 28 years," Kaptur told Reuters after Kucinich had conceded.

The Ohio fight between incumbents was the first of 11 Congressional primary contests across the country this year with incumbents facing off -- seven with two Democrats competing and four with two Republicans.

Kucinich is considered one of the most liberal members of the House. At 23, he was elected to the Cleveland City Council and was the city's "boy mayor" from 1977 to 1979. He has served in Congress since 1997, and ran for the Democratic nomination for president in 2004 and 2008.

Kucinich opposed the Iraq war -- so much so that in 2008 he introduced articles of impeachment against Bush alleging misconduct and forced an impeachment vote on the House floor. The measure failed.

Kucinich also advocated ending the war on drugs, and faced criticism when he said he considered running for Congress in Washington state if redistricting left him without a district.

Kaptur, also 65, and in Congress since 1983, is the longest serving woman in the House, a member of the influential House Appropriations Committee, and could be its ranking member if re-elected.

In other Ohio contests, incumbent Republican Jean Schmidt from the Cincinnati area lost her seat in Congress. With nearly all returns counted, she trailed Brad Wenstrup, a little-known challenger with Tea Party support, according to the official results on the Secretary of State's website.

In the race for an Ohio U.S. Senate seat, 34-year-old state Treasurer Josh Mandel easily won the Republican primary to challenge incumbent Senator Sherrod Brown, who was unopposed in the Democratic primary. Early opinion polls have Brown with a double-digit lead over Mandel, although the Republican has raised a surprising amount of money for the race.
