New NASA lander to help scientists study how Mars formed

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Mon Aug 20, 2012 7:27pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA's Mars Curiosity rover is going to get some company.

The U.S. space agency on Monday selected a small Mars lander for a hotly contested small planetary science mission to launch in 2016. The point of the mission is to help figure out how Mars formed, information that scientists say will give them insight into how rocky bodies like the Earth were created.

Unlike Curiosity, a car-sized surface rover that landed on August 6 to search for habitats where microbial life could thrive on Mars, the new probe will be focused on what is happening deep in the planet's core.

The solar-powered lander, called InSight, will include a French-built seismometer to determine if Mars has "Marsquakes" and a thermometer to measure how much heat is coming from the planet's core, officials said.

"This is something that has interested the scientific community for many years," John Grunsfeld, NASA's associate administrator for science, told reporters during a conference call on Monday.

"Seismology is the standard method by which we've learned to understand the interior of the Earth and we have no such knowledge for Mars," Grunsfeld said.

While the lander will not be as elaborately outfitted as Curiosity, which has 10 instruments for chemical analysis and other studies, InSight will have a German-built drill that can penetrate 30 feet into the Martian crust, officials said.

The project competed against two other proposed missions for $425 million in NASA funding and a ride into space.

The other contenders were: a project to explore a liquid methane lake on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn; and a robotic hopper that would sprint around the surface of a comet measuring how sunlight changes the surface.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, which is overseeing the Curiosity mission, will lead InSight.

The lander will be designed to last two years.

Oh man, I have to tell you that I love the slender man mythos as much as the next guy, but I just can't get past the clutter here. There are a bunch of spelling and diction mistakes that are really going to turn off any serious participant. Maybe fix it up a little? That said, I'd love to see how SERE instruction stands up to an omnicient being.

Bomb wounds Iraq cleric who urged end to insurgency

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A prominent Iraqi Sunni cleric who urged Islamist armed groups to end their insurgency was critically wounded, and four of his bodyguards killed, when a car bomb hit his convoy in Baghdad on Sunday.

Mehdi al-Sumaidai, who once fought U.S. troops in Iraq and was part of a Sunni body issuing religious edicts, had been negotiating with insurgent groups who vowed to fight on after the withdrawal of American troops in December.

The attack came as al Qaeda's local wing, Islamic State of Iraq, has warned of a new campaign and security analysts say fighters in Iraq are benefiting from funds and morale from Islamists slipping into Syria to join the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad next door.

Al Qaeda's wing andg six Sunni insurgent groups are still fighting in Iraq, mostly against Shi'ites and security forces to try to stir up sectarian tensions, but they also target Sunnis they brand traitors allied with the Shi'ite-led government.

Police said a parked car bomb blew up when Sumaidai's convoy arrived near his residence in Yarmouk District, central western Baghdad, after he finished prayers to mark the Eid al-Fitr festival to end the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"Sumaidai was brought to us with four other people, all of them seriously injured. Sumaidai was wounded in many parts of his body," said a policeman at the Baghdad hospital where the cleric was taken after the blast.

Sumaidai was previously a jihadist who led a militant group that fought American troops in western Baghdad after the 2003 invasion to oust Saddam Hussein.

He spent four years in U.S. jails in Iraq before being released in 2008. During his time in jail he built good relations with fellow detainees who had led rival Shi'ite militias.

Al Qaeda in Iraq and other Sunni Islamists are hostile to Iraq's Shi'ite-led government, which many minority Sunnis feel has sidelined them from power-sharing agreements since the fall of Sunni dictator Saddam.

Iraq's al Qaeda affiliate has claimed responsibility for a wave of attacks across the country in June and July it said were part of a new offensive.

The level of violence has fallen sharply since the height of the war in 2006-2007 when sectarian slaughter killed tens of thousands of Iraqis. But insurgents have carried out at least one major, complex bombing a month since December.

College student's stolen car found, but school items gone

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A college student whose car was stolen Friday -- with all her school books and supplies inside -- received a little bit of good and bad news recently.

Members of the Portland Police Bureau called Jenna Carson to tell her that her car -- a 1993 Honda Accord -- was found in Clackamas Town Center.

The car was returned to her, but all of her books, homework and other school-related items that she needed to have in order to study to become a veterinarian, were gone.

Carson, a student at Clackamas Community College, said some community members came forward and offered to donate money to help her pay for new books. She also said she knows of a scholarship for books she'll apply for, but that it won't retroactively pay for books from this term.

In the end, Carson said she'll take out a bigger loan and keep pushing on to live her dream.

The Army Has Issued Anti-Suicide Nasal Spray To Keep Troops From Taking The

I think it's admirable that measures are being put in place, and the issue is being addressed.

If this was WWII, Vietnam, era, we'd never hear about any of this, and, we didn't back then.

Sure, there's the argument that we shouldn't be in certain places, but, regardless the conflict, regardless the when, where, who, and what of the cause, there will always be detractors.
Importantly, measures are being put in place to assist our troops who need the assistance.

Hopefully this nasal spray is non-addictive, and has no unhappy side effects.

Support your troops, regardless whether you support the cause and reasons they're there, wherever 'there' may be, and for whatever reason.

Golden age of prostate cancer treatment hailed as fourth drug in 2 years extends life

Friday, August 17, 2012

The head of one of the UK's leading cancer research organisations has hailed a golden age in prostate cancer drug discovery as for the fourth time in two years results are published finding a new drug can significantly extend life.

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine today shows the drug enzalutamide can significantly extend life and improve quality of life in men with advanced prostate cancer ? in findings that could further widen the treatment options for men with the disease.

The Institute of Cancer Research, London, and its partner hospital The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust jointly led the new Phase III trial of enzalutamide and the Phase III trials of two other drugs, cabazitaxel and abiraterone. Abiraterone was also discovered at The Institute of Cancer Research and was recently made available on the NHS. A further drug sipuleucel-T has also been shown to extend life in the two-year period.

Professor Alan Ashworth, chief executive of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), said cancer research in the UK was finally delivering new treatment options for men with advanced prostate cancer after a long period where the options were limited.

Professor Ashworth said: "Advanced prostate cancer is extremely difficult to treat, and it's taken a massive coordinated effort to finally bring new drugs into the pipeline, after decades where there were no options once old-style hormone treatment stopped working.

"What we're seeing now is an unprecedented period of success for prostate cancer research, with four new drugs shown to extend life in major clinical trials in just two years, and several others showing promise. It truly is a golden age for prostate cancer drug discovery and development."

Professor Martin Gore, medical director of The Royal Marsden Hospital, said: "We are delighted with the recent progress that has been made in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer and to see the impact this is having on our patients, many of whom are living longer with a better quality of life as the result of these new drugs."

Enzalutamide, a new type of hormone treatment, was assessed in 1,199 patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer that had previously received chemotherapy, in a multinational, randomised placebo-controlled trial sponsored by pharmaceutical companies Medivation and Astellas.

Median survival with enzalutamide was 18.4 months, compared with 13.6 months for men receiving a placebo. Around 43 per cent of men taking enzalutamide as part of the AFFIRM trial reported an improved quality of life, compared with 18 per cent of men taking a placebo. In November last year, the trial's Independent Data Monitoring Committee recommended that the trial be stopped early and men who received the placebo be offered enzalutamide.

The Phase III trial was jointly led by Professor Johann de Bono, head of the Drug Development Unit at the ICR and The Royal Marsden.

Real Estate Investors Take A Tip Coming From Yamaha ATV Pieces ...

So many people are buzzing concerning Web 2.Zero in the last 6 months. It is exciting to see this type of change happen in our altering economy. You will find there?s wide range of change taking place in how we experience new products, goods and brands. Thanks to Web 2.Zero we can have other people serve as experts of their field along with interact with all of us. This changes the way we see the world most of us live in santa maria real estate. Its changes the way we experience items and make judgements about acquiring services.

After the dot internet era there was a distance with anything web linked. A lot of people dropped faith. A lot of investors misplaced faith within the webs interest reach people. But then some thing magical occurred. Web 2.2 was created and after this multiple individuals could connect to each other. Currently thanks to this innovation the topic of brand developing has suddenly grown up. Engines like google have also developed in the last Six months. Real estate investors have notice of the and have connected. Many real-estate professionals have charge of their very own marketing and therefore are putting their houses and properties on the 1st page of Google, Msn, and Aol. This has inspired other market sectors.

Since property professionals have made this seem easy additional industries have got notice along with following go well with. Today it isn?t uncommon to view Yamaha dealerships place their ATV pieces on the web to buy. Kawasaki motorcycle elements dealers will also be placing their own catalog on the web. Honda ATV parts is found online right now as well as BMW parts and European auto parts. It can be nothing short of the revolution. There are rules in relation to putting a brand name online. You need to understand your industry and how to situation your web internet sites on the engines like google Santa Maria ca real estate.

I pointed out that a lot of sectors are looking at the guinea pigs ? in such cases, the real estate business. If these types of early adaptors will make it function online then maybe Web 2.2 could work for many other industries. Thanks to these web based marketers there are many markets who is able to jump on the web make it most work such as the Yamaha atv elements dealers. Your parallels of those two markets are interesting. Markets are tough. It is not unusual for a hot real estate market to have 124,000,1000 competing web pages. When some other competitive industries such as Kawasaki along with Yamaha see this kind of dynamic on the internet then they feel that it is secure to jump in the sport. Soon a great many other industries may jump in the online game such as home redecorating, automotive dealerships and cool product launches.

Jennifer Garner goes 'Green' | Jen Garner Net

It still amuses actress Jennifer Garner to hear that her visits home to Charleston cause a stir. The Hollywood star snickers slightly at the mention of being the subject of Facebook updates and tweets while she was in Charleston recently.

The actress, who was calling from her seat in the back of a car on her way to do press for her new film, ?The Odd Life of Timothy Green,? hadn?t heard.

?I don?t use them,? she said, referring to Facebook and Twitter. ?I do think Facebook is a great way to get in touch with old friends, but I prefer to just come home and see my friends when I see them.?

Garner was home a few weeks ago. She returned to Charleston to speak at the Southern Leadership Conference on behalf of Save The Children, a children?s rights advocacy group. Garner is an artist ambassador for the organization.

She said she was originally only going to be in town for a couple of days but managed to stretch out the time to nine days, long enough to convince her parents to come along with her to the premiere of ?Timothy Green,? which is in theaters now.

Garner told them to bite the bullet, hop a flight, brave the human wall of paparazzi and come see it with her.

She said, ?I told them, if there?s a premiere, if there?s ever something [of mine] you?re going to go to again, this is it!?

And really, there couldn?t be a better film for her to take her parents to. Over her career, Garner has been in a couple of movies that might have been a little awkward for Mom and Dad. She played a prostitute in ?Catch Me if You Can,? the comic book super villain Elektra in ?Daredevil,? and her character in ?Arthur? was pretty unpleasant.

Her turn as Laura Pickler in the upcoming dark comedy ?Butter? (which she also produced) may again find her taking on a quirky, but not entirely likable character.

However, ?The Odd Life of Timothy Green? is solid family fare. It?s a light, magical comedy about an infertile couple (Garner and Joel Edgerton) who bury a box of wishes for a child in their backyard and wind up with a 10-year-old boy on their doorstep.

The film is light on the movie magic, but heavy on human emotion.

?It?s not a big FX film,? Garner said. ?It feels to me like an old-fashioned Disney film.?

Garner said the film, co-written and directed by Peter Hedges (?Dan in Real Life,? ?What?s Eating Gilbert Grape??), follows several relationships in the film, which change as a child enters their lives. How he gets there is fantastical, but the result isn?t.

?Everyone should recognize themselves somewhere in the movie,? she said.

Garner, with three children of her own, is the furthest thing from childless, but she said she understood her character from the perspective of a first time mother.

?As a parent, I couldn?t help but relate to her nervous energy, her first time out of a box and how she wanted to everything to go right and make sure her child was happy all the time and treated well by everyone else ? and that?s not realistic, of course.

?You learn that pretty quickly, but a lot of the time you have to go through it to learn it.?

The film, she believed, has a broad family appeal. Kids are supposed to think it?s really a movie for them, and parents are supposed to think it?s really a movie for them. Either way, she said, ?The Odd Life of Timothy Green? is supposed to be for everybody. It?s a family film about families, regardless of how the family is put together.

Garner said, ?I didn?t think the movie was trying to make a huge statement about adoption or foster care, but maybe it is. It?s definitely pro-adoption, pro-foster care. It?s definitely pro-making-a-family-however-you-can.?

NIH study suggests potential hurdle to universal flu vaccine development may be overcome

NIH study suggests potential hurdle to universal flu vaccine development may be overcome [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 15-Aug-2012

In the quest for a universal influenza vaccineone that elicits broadly neutralizing antibodies that can protect against most or all strains of flu virusscientists have faced a sobering question: Does pre-existing immunity generated by prior exposure to influenza virus or vaccine hamper production of broadly neutralizing antibodies? If so, then a universal flu vaccine might work best (and perhaps only) in very young children who have had limited exposure to influenza viruses or vaccines.

Now, in studies using mice and ferrets, investigators from the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, have shown that broadly neutralizing influenza antibodies can indeed be elicited by a prime-boost vaccine regimen, even when the animals had pre-existing immunity to influenza. The vaccine regimen consisted of a DNA vaccine prime followed by boosting with an inactivated seasonal vaccine. It did not matter if the pre-existing immunity was due to exposure to a flu virus or if it followed vaccination with standard seasonal influenza vaccine. Influenza-immune ferrets inoculated with the prime-boost regimen were protected against challenge with unmatched influenza virus strains. If the same effect is found in studies in people, it might be possible to develop vaccines that give long-lasting flu protection to people of all ages, according to the researchers. Several clinical trials to examine the ability of first-generation universal flu vaccines to generate broadly neutralizing antibodies are either under way or planned at the VRC.

Previously unknown cleaning system in brain: Newer imaging technique brings 'glymphatic system' to light

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? A previously unrecognized system that drains waste from the brain at a rapid clip has been discovered by neuroscientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The findings were published online August 15 in Science Translational Medicine.

The highly organized system acts like a series of pipes that piggyback on the brain's blood vessels, sort of a shadow plumbing system that seems to serve much the same function in the brain as the lymph system does in the rest of the body -- to drain away waste products.

"Waste clearance is of central importance to every organ, and there have been long-standing questions about how the brain gets rid of its waste," said Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., senior author of the paper and co-director of the University's Center for Translational Neuromedicine. "This work shows that the brain is cleansing itself in a more organized way and on a much larger scale than has been realized previously.

"We're hopeful that these findings have implications for many conditions that involve the brain, such as traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and Parkinson's disease," she added.

Nedergaard's team has dubbed the new system "the glymphatic system," since it acts much like the lymphatic system but is managed by brain cells known as glial cells. The team made the findings in mice, whose brains are remarkably similar to the human brain.

Scientists have known that cerebrospinal fluid or CSF plays an important role cleansing brain tissue, carrying away waste products and carrying nutrients to brain tissue through a process known as diffusion. The newly discovered system circulates CSF to every corner of the brain much more efficiently, through what scientists call bulk flow or convection.

"It's as if the brain has two garbage haulers -- a slow one that we've known about, and a fast one that we've just met," said Nedergaard. "Given the high rate of metabolism in the brain, and its exquisite sensitivity, it's not surprising that its mechanisms to rid itself of waste are more specialized and extensive than previously realized."

While the previously discovered system works more like a trickle, percolating CSF through brain tissue, the new system is under pressure, pushing large volumes of CSF through the brain each day to carry waste away more forcefully.

The glymphatic system is like a layer of piping that surrounds the brain's existing blood vessels. The team found that glial cells called astrocytes use projections known as "end feet" to form a network of conduits around the outsides of arteries and veins inside the brain -- similar to the way a canopy of tree branches along a well-wooded street might create a sort of channel above the roadway.

Those end feet are filled with structures known as water channels or aquaporins, which move CSF through the brain. The team found that CSF is pumped into the brain along the channels that surround arteries, then washes through brain tissue before collecting in channels around veins and draining from the brain.

How has this system eluded the notice of scientists up to now?

The scientists say the system operates only when it's intact and operating in the living brain, making it very difficult to study for earlier scientists who could not directly visualize CSF flow in a live animal, and often had to study sections of brain tissue that had already died. To study the living, whole brain, the team used a technology known as two-photon microscopy, which allows scientists to look at the flow of blood, CSF and other substances in the brain of a living animal.

While a few scientists two or three decades ago hypothesized that CSF flow in the brain is more extensive than has been realized, they were unable to prove it because the technology to look at the system in a living animal did not exist at that time.

"It's a hydraulic system," said Nedergaard. "Once you open it, you break the connections, and it cannot be studied. We are lucky enough to have technology now that allows us to study the system intact, to see it in operation."

First author Jeffrey Iliff, Ph.D., a research assistant professor in the Nedergaard lab, took an in-depth look at amyloid beta, the protein that accumulates in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease. He found that more than half the amyloid removed from the brain of a mouse under normal conditions is removed via the glymphatic system.

"Understanding how the brain copes with waste is critical. In every organ, waste clearance is as basic an issue as how nutrients are delivered. In the brain, it's an especially interesting subject, because in essentially all neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, protein waste accumulates and eventually suffocates and kills the neuronal network of the brain," said Iliff.

"If the glymphatic system fails to cleanse the brain as it is meant to, either as a consequence of normal aging, or in response to brain injury, waste may begin to accumulate in the brain. This may be what is happening with amyloid deposits in Alzheimer's disease," said Iliff. "Perhaps increasing the activity of the glymphatic system might help prevent amyloid deposition from building up or could offer a new way to clean out buildups of the material in established Alzheimer's disease," he added.

In addition to Iliff and Nedergaard, other authors from Rochester include Minghuan Wang, Yonghong Liao, Benjamin Plogg, Weiguo Peng, Edward Vates, Rashid Deane, and Steven Goldman. Also contributing were Erlend Nagelhus and Georg Gundersen of the University of Oslo, and Helene Benveniste of the Health Science Center at Stony Brook University.

The work was funded by the National Institutes of Health (grant numbers R01NS078304 and R01NS078167), the U.S. Department of Defense, and the Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Charitable Foundation.

Scene in Manchester Football fantasy gets Memorial grad in game

SO, I NEVER jumped on the ?Fifty Shades of Grey? bandwagon , but I have become a fan of ?Fifty Shades of Brady.? How could I resist? It was written by 2009 Manchester Memorial High School graduate Rachel Hedge and won her the opportunity to play flag football with Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and a bunch of other celebrities of field and film. It was all part of a Mix 104.1 radio contest that asked listeners to submit short romantic stories similar to the ?Fifty Shades of Grey? series, but with a football twist.

Let's just say the story is set in the showers after a game and features Brady and Gronkowski. Throw in some football terminology that also works well as romantic novel innuendo and you've got an idea of Hedge's winning story.

Hedge got to meet the stars of her story while playing in a flag football game to benefit the nonprofit Best Buddies organization at Harvard Stadium in June.

Hedge wrote in an email to The Scene that was star-struck when she first met Brady, ?Gronk? and the other celebrities at the event. But after a while she almost forgot they were all rich and famous.

?They were on the field doing a great thing for the Best Buddies charity, and it was a great reminder that they are just normal people who happen to live a less-than-normal life,? she said.

The highlights of the event, Hedge said, were catching a pass from Brady, chatting with actor Michael Chiklis and eating a meal grilled outdoors by Food Network star Guy Fieri at the postgame VIP party.

?I am not exaggerating when I say it was the best food I have ever tasted,? she said.

Hedge is not new to the pages of the New Hampshire Union Leader. In addition to being a standout softball pitcher at Memorial High, she was also a Francis Wayland Parker Scholar of the Month. Now a senior at Assumption College, she's continuing to make her hometown proud, having earned her school's 2012 Spring Assumption Premier Student-Athlete Award with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

You can find the audio recording of Hedge's ?Fifty Shades of Brady? story by Googling, ?50 Shades of Brady Winner.?

More celebrity encounters

I don't like most reality shows, but I love the ones about cooking. So I'm a little jealous of Ping PR's Monica Bardier Holt, who recently had a sweet experience meeting the stars of ?Cake Boss? during a family vacation to the New York City area last week.

Bardier Holt and her 12-year-old daughter, Casey Bardier, of Concord, are huge fans of the popular TLC reality show, which features members of the Valastro family and their antics running Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, N.J.

After meeting some of the Valastros, the New Hampshire mom-and-daughter duo took a fondant decorating class at the bakery and made a cake for Casey's older sister, Maddie Bardier, who celebrated her 16th birthday Thursday.

Fisher Cats: Back to school

I'd like to give a shout-out to the Fisher Cats organization, which is planning to provide school supplies to thousands of Manchester students whose families are struggling financially.

On Wednesday, Aug. 22, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., the team and its Fisher Cats Foundation will open the doors of Northeast Delta Dental Stadium to present Manchester Goes Back to School 2012. Elementary and junior high school students in need are encouraged to attend. The event also will feature fun activities, such as bounce houses and face painting.

Most of the supplies have already been donated by members of Manchester Christian Church, but the Fisher Cats are looking for additional financial donations as well as volunteers to help distribute the supplies or refreshments.

To become involved in Manchester Goes Back to School 2012, contact Jenna Raizes, Fisher Cats Director of Marketing & Public Affairs, at 641-2005, ext. 177, or jraizes@nhfishercats.com.

Can you say 'gyro?'

The Gyro Spot, featuring a menu of rotisserie meats and other Greek delicacies, is scheduled to hold its grand opening tomorrow. Mayor Ted Gatsas, a proud Greek himself, should be on hand at the 1073 Elm St. restaurant (next to Republic) for the 11 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

I'd like to thank the owners of Gyro Spot for saving this French/Scotch-Irish gal from embarrassment when I order their premier menu item. They kindly put the proper pronunciation (yee-row) on their website, www.thegyrospot.com.

NH365.org event of the week

I can't wait to see how my talented friend Aimee Robidoux looks in a nun's habit in ?Meshuggah-Nuns!? this weekend. This play from the popular ?Nunsense? series has the little sisters of Hoboken saving the day on a Faiths of All Nations cruise. The Majestic Theater production at the Manchester Community Music takes place this Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., next Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and next Sunday at 2 p.m. Robidoux, a Caucasian, will be playing a role usually assigned to an African American actor. Yes, she is that good.

Visit www.NH365.org for more information about this and other local events.

NMRCRC Summer Newsletter 2012 | New Mexico Religious ...

RCRC Welcomes New CEO, Rev. Harry Knox!

Washington, DC ? The Board of Directors of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Reverend Harry Knox as President and Chief Executive Officer of RCRC, the nation?s coalition of organizations from 15 denominations and faith traditions committed to reproductive rights and justice.

Reverend Knox is a national leader in the progressive faith community and a well-known advocate for reproductive and sexual health and justice. Reverend Knox was the founding director of the Human Rights Campaign?s Religion and Faith Program, where he supervised the creation of a national speakers? bureau that reached more than 10 million Americans monthly and was instrumental in creating a national network of 22 progressive state clergy coalitions. In February 2009, Rev. Knox was appointed by President Obama to the President?s Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Since 2011, he has been Interim Executive Director of Integrity USA, the voice of LGBT Episcopalians and their allies. He began his position at RCRC July 16, 2012.

?In the current climate of relentless attacks on abortion and birth control in the name of religion, our country needs the faith-inspired courage Reverend Knox brings to safeguarding and advancing women?s health and the dignity of all people. ?said Reverend Dr. Alethea Smith-Withers, Chair of the RCRC Board of Directors.

Reverend Knox says of his appointment: ?There is no more vital work to be done in this historic moment than stopping the rollback of women?s access to health care and self-determination. Women need more health care resources and options, not less. Young people are a priority for RCRC and we look forward to an expansion of engagement with youth and young adult leaders through our Spiritual Youth for Reproductive Freedom program. Church, temple or synagogue should be the first place people of faith and their families turn when facing difficult decisions about reproductive health. RCRC will continue to lead in providing faith leaders the resources they need to offer responsible guidance and support. I ask for the prayers of all those who care about reproductive justice as I begin this new role.?

Reverend Knox?s management and advocacy experience includes positions with the American Cancer Society; Equality Florida; Georgia Equality; and Freedom to Marry. He has pastored churches in Georgia and Texas. He was the recipient of the 2000 Cordle Award for Promotion of God?s Diversity and Lancaster Theological Seminary?s 2005 Robert V. Moss Medal for Excellence in Ministry.

US Supreme Court Upholds Affordable Care Act.

The Supreme Court?s decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act is a tremendous victory for women and their families, including the 50 million Americans currently without insurance.? As people of faith committed to reproductive justice, we see this as an affirmation of our continuing struggle to expand access to reproductive health care and a victory over a health insurance system that is a moral disgrace. This decision opens the doors to a more compassionate and just society.? We are prayerfully grateful that women can begin to achieve health equity for the first time.

In spite of the favorable decision by the Supreme court, we are concerned about continued efforts to repeal all or most of the law and the Roman Catholic hierarchy?s lawsuits challenging birth control coverage.? We urge President Obama and our elected representatives to support the law and to resist the Catholic bishops? pressure to remove the birth control provision. We will continue to mobilize the enormous religious support for the Affordable Care Act and full coverage of contraception and other women?s health measures as a matter of social justice and sound public health policy.

We are also concerned with the decision by the Supreme Court to allow lawmakers to refuse to expand the Medicaid program to ensuring access to affordable health care to low-income individuals. We take seriously the Divine charge, central to each of our religious traditions, to place a special priority on protecting children and those who are vulnerable and most likely to be excluded.? Medicaid is essential to the health and well-being of low-income women and their families. Women make up the majority of Medicaid beneficiaries and the expansion is the best path to keeping women and their families healthier.

RCRC Transitioning to a New Era? of Reproductive Justice!

Dear Allies and Supporters:

This is a time of much transition at the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.? We bid farewell to our leader of the past fourteen years, Reverend Carlton Veazey. We are confident that he will continue his lifelong commitment to social justice, and that his retirement will be an active one.? It is a time to honor and reflect upon Rev. Veazey?s many contributions to RCRC, including his assistance in developing the organization?s new Strategic Plan.? You will undoubtedly see elements of the Plan emerging in our work moving forward, but here are some highlights:

The Council of Governors will be reconstituted as an Advisory Council, with a more active role in advancing the goals of RCRC, such as organizing denominational members to participate in RCRC?s campaigns and identifying issues where RCRC?s voice could make a meaningful contribution.

A broader and more diverse membership structure, which will seek to build the grassroots network of RCRC with individuals and congregations.? The Coalition will also maintain its longstanding denominational members.

Most importantly, RCRC will become an organization committed to advancing Reproductive Justice.? This means that the organization?s mission will include supporting the rights of individuals to have the children they want and to raise the children they have with adequate support, in addition to supporting the right of access to family planning and safe, legal abortion care. ?This is an explicit commitment to addressing the social justice issues that impede reproductive freedom, including racism, sexism, classism, homophobia and able-ism.

We know that we have a formidable task ahead of us, to both hold onto our gains and to defeat the seemingly endless efforts to deny individuals their reproductive freedom. We ask for your prayers of encouragement in our work and your support at this exciting time of transition.

Peace and Blessings to You!

Jill Morrison
Vice-Chair of the RCRC Board of Directors

Jill Morrison is Executive Director of the Women?s Law and Public Policy Fellowship Program and a Visiting Professor at Georgetown University Law Center .

Reverend Dr. Carlton W. Veazey Retires as CEO of RCRC

Reverend Dr. Carlton W. Veazey retired in December 2011 as President and CEO of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, after a 14-year tenure marked by an expansion of the Coalition and the development of a new reproductive justice focus.

Reverend Veazey, who is a minister of the National Baptist Convention U.S.A., is a nationally prominent religious spokesperson for reproductive and sexual health, rights and justice. He joined RCRC in 1996 and was named chief executive in 1997.

As an advocate for abortion rights, comprehensive reproductive health services, and sexuality education, Reverend Veazey articulated the moral and religious underpinnings of the pro-choice position, a perspective that is too often ignored or misrepresented in the public debate about reproductive issues. He was a chief spokesperson for that position with Congress, government agencies, religious organizations, advocacy organizations, and the media. Reverend Veazey is widely known for founding the Coalition?s celebrated National Black Church Initiative and its unique sexuality education programs for African-American youth and adults.

At the historic 2004 March for Women?s Lives, Reverend Veazey was a commanding presence in a white clerical robe, speaking with moral authority to the million-plus people in the crowd. They cheered when he said, ?The time has come for the religious people of this country?to proclaim with all our moral power that women?s rights are also civil rights and human rights.? As some in Congress fought against full coverage of reproductive health in the new health care legislation, Reverend Veazey told a rally that abortion ?is a God-given right,? a statement that received global media coverage and an unforgettable comment from a political commentator: ?To think that God might have favored and trusted women shifted the very ground of my being. For me, it was a completely new idea.?

Wherever he was, Carlton Veazey found a friend. He stopped to speak to people on the street , gave a taxi driver a $100 bill for a church program for needy families, and counted the leaders of the reproductive rights and women?s movement ? Gloria Feldt, Kate Michelman, Gloria Steinem?as friends. In his 15 years with the Coalition, Reverend Veazey was one of the most important religious voices in the country on reproductive justice. ?He showed that people of faith can ? and should ? speak up for women?s rights and human rights.

NMRCRC Director on the road, visiting rural communities.

As you can see from our special summer newsletter, the Religious Coalition is in an exciting period of change!? In my final year (2011) as one of two affiliate representatives to the RCRC Board of Directors, I had the great privilege to serve on the strategic planning committee.?? The new Strategic Plan will place the Religious Coalition as the leading religious voice for reproductive justice in the country.

I?m most excited about the renewed commitment to the affiliate network as part of the new Strategic Plan.? Although this will mean higher expectations for RCRC affiliates, it also means additional resources and support for the affiliate and grassroots network of the Coalition.

As part of that support, we are able to visit several rural communities this summer and fall. We need all of your support to make sure that our legislature doesn?t pass any of the anti-women, anti-family legislation we?ve seen in so many other states.? We?ll be visiting the northwest corner of the state in August and the North Central in September.? Please call or email if you would like to set up a visit with your congregation or a group of pro-choice friends!

NMRCRC is also a member of Raising Women?s Voices for Healthcare Reform.? Raising Women?s voices has a great presentation that is available at no cost to any group or organization that explains the benefits of the Affordable Care Act for women and families.? We?d love to show it to you!

For example, did you know that beginning August 1 of this year, all new insurance plans are required to cover women?s preventive health care without any additional costs, like co-payments? These include:

??well-woman visits;

??screening for gestational diabetes;

??screening for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing for women 30 years and older;

??sexually-transmitted infection screening and counseling;

??human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening and counseling;

??FDA-approved contraception methods and contraceptive counseling;

??breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling; and

??domestic violence screening and counseling.

Finally, check out our wonderful joint fundraiser with Santa Fe NOW.? If you can?t attend, please send a generous donation, we have several requests each month for help with housing and transportation for abortion care patients traveling to Albuquerque providers.? We?d hate to have to turn down anyone?s request for help.

Keeping the faith, for justice,
