Obama and Romney make young girl cry

Former FEMA director Michael Brown, who was heavily criticized for the agency's failure to prepare for Hurricane Katrina, has criticized President Obama for responding to Hurricane Sandy too early. In an interview with Denver Westword, Brown said, "One thing [President Obama's]? gonna be asked is, why did he jump on [Hurricane Sandy] so quickly and [...]

AP Sources: Vick still starter for Eagles

Michael Vick remains the starting quarterback in Philadelphia, for now.

Three people familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Monday night that coach Andy Reid hasn't benched Vick.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because all announcements about the starting lineup come from Reid. The Eagles' headquarters was closed Monday due to Superstorm Sandy, and there was no media availability.

Vick, the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback, has struggled this season and Philadelphia (3-4) has lost three straight games.

Reid didn't endorse Vick after Sunday's 30-17 loss to Atlanta, saying he's going to evaluate all his starters. Vick then said he would support whatever decision Reid makes.

That led to speculation Vick's days were numbered. But Reid is sticking with Vick over unproven rookie Nick Foles as of now.

Reid has changed his mind on his starting quarterbacks in a 24-hour period before, reversing his call on Kevin Kolb and replacing him with Vick in 2010. It's unlikely he would do it again and give Foles his first NFL snap on the road in a Monday night game against New Orleans (2-5) next week.

Foles, a third-round pick out of Arizona, had an outstanding preseason. However, he did so playing against backups, third-stringers and guys who didn't make a roster. Foles impressed coaches and teammates, and fans have been calling for him to start since Week 1.

Vick wasn't the problem against the Falcons. The defense under new coordinator Todd Bowles allowed scores on the first six possessions, including touchdowns on the first three.

As for the offense, injuries to All-Pro left tackle Jason Peters and center Jason Kelce have crippled the unit. Vick hasn't had much time to throw and gets hit often. Playcalling isn't helping, either. Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg have underused All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy in the past three losses.

Vick led Philadelphia to comeback wins with go-ahead touchdowns on its final drive the first two games of the season. But he's been inconsistent and turnover-prone overall. Vick has just a 78.6 passer rating, his lowest since joining the Eagles. He's coming off a rare turnover-free performance after throwing eight interceptions and losing five fumbles in the first six games.

Benching Vick and turning the offense over to Foles could be a way to shake things up. It also could be interpreted as giving up on the season.

The Eagles still have time to turn things around and save Reid's job. He's already been told by owner Jeffrey Lurie that another 8-8 finish would be "unacceptable."

Podcasting Is Becoming More Popular - Small Business Trends

Listening is becoming the renewed brand engagement and advancement tool and content is its new currency:

?The US podcasting audience is ballooning, and eMarketer projects that growth will continue at least through 2013. By then, there will be 37.6 million people who download podcasts monthly, more than double the 2008 figure of 17.4 million. As a percentage of Internet users, podcast downloaders are expected to grow from 9% in 2008 to 17% in 2013.?

podcasting

Podcasting has been an integral part of my content marketing strategy since 2009. This medium has opened up more doors and connections and established my professional credibility, more than just about any marketing platform that I have used.

By definition, a?podcast?is:

?A type of?digital media?consisting of an episodic series of?audio,?video,?PDF, or?ePub?files?subscribed to and?downloaded?through?web syndication?or streamed online to a computer or mobile device.?

Since the 1930?s there have been radio talk shows and news programs. Today, through the evolution of the Internet capabilities, along with cheaper hardware and software, audio podcasts are doing what was historically done through radio broadcast stations.

There is growing buzz?and data that suggests a big uptick and an increased usage of podcasting for good reasons. Podcasts are instructional, fun, mobile friendly, more personal, brand builders and easy to do. People are podcasting on?anything you can imagine from business, cooking, travel, sewing, sports,? investing, being a working Mom or single Dad, ?and are finding an audience for them.

One of the key benefits of audio podcasts is the power of listening, hearing someone talking to you, and that theater of the mind allows people to concentrate and learn better.

Reading an article or book is very effective but listening to someone talk to you, hearing their voice talking to you?about something you are interested in increases engagement. The archived podcast also allows people to go back and listen at their convenience and radio/audio?is an iconic, mature media that people know and trust.

B2B marketers, responding to an Optify survey,?reported the 3 most important elements of successful content. ?Survey respondents resoundingly chose:

 • Engaging and compelling story telling?(81.5%)
 • Originality (52.6%)
 • Custom content (49.2%)

If you want to educate, entertain and serve people with great content, podcast radio is hard to beat.

Below I?ve listed 4 simple guidelines for creating and promoting successful podcasts:

Selectively Choose Content?

Align your content with who you are and what you want to be known for. ?Ask yourself, ?What?are you knowledgeable about that there is an audience for?? And, ?What do you?want to be known for??

Be Consistent

Consistently perform your segments?and integrate them into your overall content marketing strategy. ?Make your podcast, email marketing, social media and?blog all work together.

Pick The Format And Style That Best Suits You

Whether it be interview format, conversational style or instructional in nature. ?And if you are interviewing,?make sure you?feature people who have good energy and have their own active social marketing platforms.

Brand Your Podcast

Make sure you are branding and presenting your podcast with a graphic?logo or avatar and a produced?open and close segment.?Practice doing them for a few weeks before you go live?so that you get comfortable and always present yourself as someone who?is serious and professional.

There are some great articles on why you should podcast, so do some research. ?And if you?re interested in podcasting, below are some?of the top radio podcasting networks and platforms that you can research, too:

And be sure to check out what some of the top podcasts are talking about, as well as how NPR, Radiolab, and ESPN?present them. ?And tell us, what are some of? your favorite podcasts?

Mechanism found for destruction of key allergy-inducing complexes

Monday, October 29, 2012

Researchers have learned how a man-made molecule destroys complexes that induce allergic responses ? a discovery that could lead to the development of highly potent, rapidly acting interventions for a host of acute allergic reactions.

The study, which will be published online Oct. 28 in Nature, was led by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of Bern, Switzerland.

The new inhibitor disarms IgE antibodies, pivotal players in acute allergies, by detaching the antibody from its partner in crime, a molecule called FcR. (Other mechanisms lead to slower-developing allergic reactions.)

"It would be an incredible intervention if you could rapidly disconnect IgE antibodies in the midst of an acute allergic response," said Ted Jardetzky, PhD, professor of structural biology and senior investigator for the study. It turns out the inhibitor used by the team does just that.

A myriad of allergens, ranging from ragweed pollen to bee venom to peanuts, can set off IgE antibodies, resulting in allergic reactions within seconds. The new inhibitor destroys the complex that tethers IgE to the cells responsible for the reaction, called mast cells. Severing this connection could improve IgE-targeted allergy treatment.

The first time a potential allergen enters the body, some people respond by making allergen-specific IgE antibodies. These antibodies stick around long after the initial allergen is cleared from the body. Most of the antibodies get snagged by IgE-specific receptors called FcRs, which are exposed on the surface of mast cells. The mast cells are then primed to react the next time a person encounters the allergen.

Dissociation of this IgE-FcR interaction is a sought-after goal of allergy treatment for a good reason: IgE-coated mast cells are grenades of histamine, and re-encountering the allergen is equivalent to pulling out the clip. When an allergen makes a return visit, it binds to the pre-loaded IgE on the mast cell surface, triggering the release of inflammatory mediators ? including histamine ? that promote the allergic response. As allergy sufferers are well aware, these nasty reactions can occur within a matter of seconds. In a severe allergic response, sudden anaphylactic shock and death can be the result.

The key to actively disabling the allergic response lies in the separation of IgE from the FcRs on the surface of mast cells. But separating these dangerous couples is a tall order because their interaction is extremely stable ? sensitizing the mast cells for weeks. Currently available treatment using omalizumab (an anti-IgE antibody sold under the trade name Xolair) can block new interactions between IgE and FcR, but it is not designed to pry the molecules apart once they've formed a bond on the surface of a mast cell. So Xolair can dampen the allergic response, but as stated on the product's website: "Xolair is not a rescue medicine and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks."

While simply blocking IgE binding is helpful for some allergy sufferers, when it comes to the rapid quenching of an acute allergic response, "what you'd really like to do is get rid of it," said Jardetzky. Along with scientists at the University of Bern, his team discovered that an engineered protein inhibitor called DARPin E2-79 stripped IgE from the mast cell receptor. Using this inhibitor, "an interaction that normally lasts for hours or days in terms of its stability is stripped off in a matter of seconds," said Jardetzky.

DARPin E2-79 is one of a family of engineered inhibitors containing protein-binding regions called ankryin repeats. While Jardetzky's group was using structural biology and biophysical approaches to probe the weak spots in the IgE-FcR interaction, scientists at the University of Bern were tinkering with DARPins that dampened IgE's disastrous effects. The collaboration of the two groups resulted in the characterization of DARPin E2-79, an inhibitor that goes beyond mere blockade to actively disassemble the IgE-FcR power couple.

Jardetzky's group solved E2-79'S structure and used this information to model its interaction with the IgE-FcR pair. Then, using sensitive biochemical techniques that detect step-by-step binding interactions between molecules, the teams were able to tease out the mechanism that the inhibitor uses to break the IgE-FcR bond.

The researchers found that E2-79 hastens the separation of the two molecules by taking advantage of a moment of weakness in the relationship between IgE and FcR. IgE maintains its interaction with FcR using two contact points, and occasionally one of these points releases while the other one keeps the pair together. Normally this brief looseness isn't enough to separate the couple, but E2-79 can swoop into the small space between them, effectively driving the couple apart.

While E2-79 is the first molecule to display these IgE stripping characteristics, Jardetzky hopes that this work will stimulate the discovery of smaller compounds capable of working even more efficiently. Drug developers generally expect large macromolecules like E2-79 to be less potent than small molecule inhibitors and unlikely to be able to disrupt complexes, so the fact that E2-79 worked so well was a surprise. Small molecules are more amenable to oral administration, and are easier and cheaper to manufacture than large macromolecules. "Now we're in the hunt for a small molecule that could have this kind of activity. That would be the real hit," said Jardetzky.

The discovery of E2-79's mechanism of IgE inhibition could lead to rapid discoveries from other labs as well. Now that scientists know what mechanism to look for, they may be inspired to dig back through freezers full of IgE inhibitors that were identified years ago, said Jardetzky. In the light of techniques described in this study, perhaps once-neglected inhibitors will show new promise in the treatment of allergic disease.

(AP) ? Police in suburban Los Angeles say they're certain of this much: Five family members who were shot ? three of them killed ? had been targeted by the gunman.

But that led to a pair of major uncertainties: Who shot them, and why?

"We do not believe this was a random act of violence," Downey police Lt. Dean Milligan said hours after the shooting Wednesday. "We do believe there is a specific reason this family was targeted and we want to know why."

The suspect shot three people at a family-owned fire extinguisher business Wednesday morning, then two more at a family home nearby before fleeing in a 2010 black Camaro that belonged to a victim or a member of their family, police said.

Three of the five victims died and the two survivors, including a 13-year-old boy, remained in critical condition, Milligan said.

The violence began just after 11 a.m. in this working class city about 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles when someone from United States Fire Protection Services Inc. called 911 to report a shooting. A few minutes after police arrived, the injured 13-year-old called dispatchers from the house down the same street, Milligan said.

Police declined to release the identities of the victims pending the notification of family members, but a neighbor said the fire business is owned by a group of brothers.

Dean Wright, who owns the septic supply business next door, said he didn't hear gunfire, but the sound of someone yelling, "hey," caught his attention. When he looked outside, police officers with guns drawn surrounded the building.

One of the owners he identified as Robert told him that the gunman shot his mother in the face, injuring her, and killed a secretary. At the family's home, the shooter fatally shot the wife of another brother and injured the teenage boy, Wright said.

Wright wasn't sure about the identity of the fifth victim, but police said a man was also killed at the business.

Wright said the two dead women each had three children.

"So now there are six children without mothers because of this idiot," Wright said. "It makes me just want to throw up."

The woman and teenager were originally at the business, but somehow got to the home in the Camaro before being shot. Police don't yet know if they drove themselves or were kidnapped by the suspect. There was no sign of forced entry at either location and police believe the suspect spoke with the victims at both locations before the shooting began.

Authorities were initially concerned about the safety of a small boy, age 4 or 5, related to the victims, but he was found unharmed at school.

The suspect does not appear to be a former employee, friend or family member and the teenager did not recognize him, Milligan said.

Police have not been able to interview the woman survivor at length because of her injuries. Witnesses told other news media that they saw her bleeding from the head outside the business.

No witnesses to the shootings other than the victims have come forward and police were reviewing surveillance footage in hopes it would give them a glimpse of the shooter.

United States Fire Protection Services is in an industrial strip across from a large Coca-Cola Co. bottling plant. The family owned business sells professional firefighting gear and equipment such as hoses and extinguishers, according to its website.

In the first hours after the shooting, as news media gathered outside police tape, a man who said his wife worked at the business showed up at the crime scene and said he needed to know if she was safe.

An officer pointed him toward a command post and he pushed past cameras and paced frantically with a cellphone to his ear before leaving a few minutes later.

Blanca Parker, who works in another business on the street, said the owners were very friendly and very aware of security.

"They were hard working," Parker said. "They worked seven days a week, 24-7."

Wright, who has owned the House of Wright for 40 years, said the area is relatively safe, but he said the fire business had a robbery a few years ago.

"I've never seen nor heard of anything close to this," he said. "I was driving to work this morning and thanking the good Lord for how much I love coming to work."

He said he'd have something else to think about now.

In race to 270, it may come down to 106 counties

LEESBURG, Va. (AP) ? How Virginia goes in the presidential election may come down to voters who live amid the small wineries, affluent subdivisions and Civil War battlegrounds of Loudon County.

Voters in the tony Hamilton County suburbs around the humming riverside economic engine of Cincinnati may tip the balance in Ohio.

To win Florida, either President Barack Obama or Mitt Romney probably will have carried Hillsborough County, where the urban seaport town of Tampa bleeds into communities of Spanish-speaking voters and retired Midwesterners.

Those areas are vastly different, yet each is full of fickle voters and bound by a proclivity to swing between Republican and Democrat every four years. All are main targets as the president and his Republican challenger look for enough victories in enough states to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to capture the White House.

The race may come down to an even narrower slice of the electorate than the nine most contested states: Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin. The outcome probably will depend on what happens in the 106 counties that Republican George W. Bush won in 2004 and that voted Democrat Obama in 2008, according to an Associated Press analysis.

The AP reviewed the vote returns in those nine states during the 2000, 2004 and 2008 elections to identify the counties that have swung between the parties and were most likely to do it again on Nov. 6.

These counties are home to people such as Matt Blunt, a 42-year-old IT manager from Sterling, Va., in Loudoun County, outside Washington. Blunt voted for Obama in 2008, hoping he could change Washington's bitter tone, but now backs Romney.

"What I see in Romney is the stronger potential for leadership than we've seen in the past four years," Blunt said, adding that Obama "hasn't lived up to the promise."

In these counties more than anywhere else, voters' phones ring every night with automated telephone surveys. Every day, glossy mailers hit their mailboxes. Televisions crackle day and night with campaign ads.

In fact, voters in the Cincinnati, Tampa and northern Virginia TV markets have been subjected to presidential campaign advertising totaling $127 million, almost one-fifth the total spent nationwide this year.

"There's more ? and more concentrated ? contact with voters in these counties that swung back and forth in these states than anybody," said Charlie Black, a veteran Republican presidential campaign strategist and informal Romney adviser.

In a race where any bit of an advantage could make the difference, the campaigns go to all this trouble to sway a tiny fraction of the electorate. In 2008, there were 6.2 million votes from those 106 counties; that was not even 5 percent of the roughly 137 million who voted for president.

There is no single reason to explain why these counties seem to shift with the political wind. Their voters are far from monolithic, having little in common other than their voting patterns.

In most of these places, there are few truly undecided voters, forcing Obama and Romney to subdivide the electorate in their attempt for any edge.

In northern Virginia, for example, Obama is reaching out to newcomers and younger veterans. Romney's pitch is stronger toward retired military members, sportsmen and social conservatives.

In counties in the West, Obama is courting educated women and Hispanics. Romney is attempting to make inroads with both, but is more focused on businesswomen and small-business owners.

As a whole, voters in these counties are less racially diverse than the nation, with a smaller percentage having with a college education.

One such area is working-class Sandusky County, Ohio, where the automotive industry's rebound has pushed the county's unemployment below the state average. The list also includes parts of southern Virginia with a substantial African-American population and North Carolina's Research Triangle.

If there's one area where these counties are linked, it may be that many have a wide segment of working-class white voters, an important group for Romney and one that Obama has struggled with.

In the hunt for 270, Obama starts with more states and electoral votes in his column. Romney must take back from the incumbent some states that Obama carried four years ago, including North Carolina and Virginia, which had been reliably Republican until 2008.

In Virginia, public and private polls show Obama narrowly ahead. Internal Republican polls have shown Romney leading in Loudoun and Prince William counties. Over time, these once reliably Republican counties have become more politically diverse, as younger, well-educated, racially and ethnically diverse voters have flocked to Washington's suburbs. Obama won four years ago by aggressively going after them and the state's robust African-American electorate.

Romney can win Virginia by taking Loudoun County away from the Democrats, holding down Obama's likely edge in other Washington suburbs, and running up big numbers in rural southern Virginia and the conservative Tidewater area.

In Ohio, Romney needs Hamilton County, especially the Cincinnati suburbs, to offset Obama's edge in Cleveland, Columbus and Dayton. Obama needs to trim Romney's advantages in the suburbs and southeastern Ohio's coal country.

The dynamic is similar in Nevada's Washoe County. It's home to Reno, a gambling mecca at the foot of the Sierra Nevadas that is a diverse mix of people, including retired and active-duty military from the nearby Naval air base, Hispanics and transplants from northern California.

If Romney stands a chance of carrying Nevada, he needs to cut into Obama's edge in Las Vegas and run up big margins in the vast ranching and mining country elsewhere. But he stands little chance of beating Obama in Nevada without Washoe County, which accounts for 15 percent to 20 percent of the state's vote.

While Obama has concentrated his Nevada efforts on Las Vegas, Romney has focused aggressively on Washoe County's veterans, and for good reason.

"Washoe is a county where Republicans need to win to have a chance in Nevada," Democratic pollster Paul Maslin said.

But some swing-voting counties don't look like they may be swinging back any time soon.

The best example is Osceola County, a bedroom community to Orlando, Fla., that has experienced an influx in the past decade of Puerto Ricans, Hispanics who are U.S. citizens.

The shift of these typically Democratic-leaning voters, as well as other Spanish-speaking voters in Colorado and Nevada, is part of longer-term trend going in the Democrats' favor and spreading into other neighboring states over the coming generation.

While it bodes well for Democrats in the future, there are no guarantees for Obama this year.

Depleted Steelers beat Bengals 24-17

CINCINNATI (AP) ? The top two running backs were gone. So were two offensive linemen. All that the Steelers had left was Ben Roethlisberger, some backup runners and one of the NFL's top defenses.

In Cincinnati, that's plenty.

Roethlisberger threw for a touchdown, overcoming his end zone interception and costly fumble, and Pittsburgh's defense clamped down on the Bengals' Dalton-to-Green connection for a 24-17 victory Sunday night.

Third-year running back Jonathan Dwyer made his first career start and ran for a career-high 122 yards, including a 32-yard gain that put it away in the final seconds. Shaun Suisham kicked field goals of 42, 47 and 42 yards.

For the Steelers (3-3), it was a significant win under tough conditions. Their first road win of the season moved them into second place into the AFC North behind Baltimore (5-2), which lost to Houston 43-13 earlier Sunday.

"It puts us right there in the hunt," safety Ryan Clark said.

Cincinnati (3-4) wasted yet another chance to show it can keep up with the division's best. The Bengals are 0-6 the last two seasons against Pittsburgh and Baltimore.

This was their best chance yet to break through. Couldn't do it against the team that always seems to win on their home field.

The Steelers improved to 12-2 at Paul Brown Stadium, where thousands of towel-waving fans make them feel at home. They have won their last five overall against their AFC North rival and 10 of the last 12.

And once again, the Bengals could blame themselves.

Andy Dalton's slip-out-of-the-hand interception set up Roethlisberger's 9-yard touchdown pass to Heath Miller and a tying 2-point conversion to the tight end with 24 seconds left in the half. Chris Rainey's 11-yard touchdown run put the Steelers ahead early in the fourth quarter, and the injury fill-ins finished them off.

"I'm proud of those guys," said Roethlisberger, who was 27 of 37 for 278 yards. "Always the thing we say is, 'Next man up.'

"I'm proud of the way those young guys stepped up. There never was a doubt they would do that."

The Bengals got the better of it at the outset, pulling ahead 14-3 by getting their running game moving behind BenJarvus Green-Ellis and turning a fumble by Roethlisberger into a touchdown. If they were going to end that streak of futility against the Steelers, this was their chance.

Dalton's only glaring mistake made the difference.

He tried to pull his arm back on a pass, but the ball slipped out of his hand and deflected off Bengals lineman Kevin Zeitler to Pittsburgh linebacker LaMarr Woodley at the Cincinnati 29-yard line with 1:23 left in the half. That set up Roethlisberger's tying TD pass and conversion.

Dalton was 14 of 28 for only 105 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He completed only one pass to Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Green, an 8-yard touchdown after Roethlisberger's fumble.

The Steelers' 31st-ranked running game was missing Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman, as well as center Maurkice Pouncey and right tackle Marcus Gilbert. Rookie Mike Adams made his first start in Gilbert's spot.

Plus, safety Troy Polamalu was inactive for the fourth time in the last five games with a calf injury.

That put a lot on Roethlisberger, who usually does well in his home state ? 15-2 all-time in Cleveland and Cincinnati ? but has rarely been so short-handed.

Didn't matter.

Foxconn says underage workers used in China plant

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Foxconn Technology Group, the world's largest contract electronics maker, has acknowledged hiring teenagers as young as 14 in a Chinese factory, in breach of national law, in a case that raises further questions over its student intern programme.

Labor rights activists in China have accused Foxconn and other big employers in China of using student interns as a cheap source of labor for production lines where it is more difficult to attract young adult workers to lower paid jobs.

Foxconn, the trading name of Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry, said it had found some interns at a plant in Yantai, in northeastern Shandong province, were under the legal working age of 16. It did not say how many were underage.

"Our investigation has shown that the interns in question, who ranged in age from 14 to 16, had worked in that campus for approximately three weeks," it said in a statement on Tuesday.

"This is not only a violation of China's labor law, it is also a violation of Foxconn policy and immediate steps have been taken to return the interns in question to their educational institutions."

China's official Xinhua news agency, citing an unnamed Yantai government official, said that 56 underage interns would be brought back to their schools.

The students had been employed after Foxconn asked the development zone in which the factory is located to help solve a labor shortage last month, when they were needed to make up a shortfall of 19,000 workers, Xinhua added.

Foxconn is Apple Inc's largest manufacturing partner, and also makes products for Dell Inc, Sony Corp and Hewlett-Packard Co among its other clients. It said the Yantai plant does not make Apple products.

Foxconn made the announcement after investigating Chinese media reports of underage interns among its China workforce of 1.2 million. It said it had found no evidence of similar violations at any of its other plants in China.

Foxconn said it would work with local government to bar the schools involved in the Yantai case from the intern programme unless shown to be compliant with labor law and company policy.

"However, we recognize that full responsibility for these violations rests with our company and we have apologized to each of the students for our role in this action," the firm said.

Foxconn and Apple have been forced to improve working conditions at Chinese factories that make most of the world's iPads and iPhones after a series of well-publicized suicides in 2010 and reports of labor abuses, such as excessive overtime, threw a spotlight on conditions inside the plants.

Last month, a riot broke out at a Foxconn plant assembling iPhones in the northern city of Taiyuan over living conditions inside Foxconn's on-site dormitories for migrant workers.

In response to the scrutiny, Foxconn plans to cut overtime to less than nine hours a week from the current 20.

It defended its intern programme on Tuesday, saying they made up only 2.7 percent of its workforce in China. Internships could be long-term or short-term, carried out in cooperation with vocational schools and other educational institutions.

The average internship lasted about three-and-a-half months, it said.

Daily Kos: Catholic High School refuses to acknowledge ...

Administrators at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis have decided that Catholic beliefs require them to refuse to recognize the fact that one of their students is transgender.

Last spring a female student arrived at school with parental units to meet with administrators because the student had come to realize that he was a boy and wanted to be referred to as male.

They asked the school where we stood on it. ?We explained we were there to care for her, love her, and we still wanted her to be a student in full standing.

--Principal Dave Worland

The fact that they couldn't use the pronoun "him" should have been an indication that things weren't going to go so well. ?Principal Worland contacted the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. ?There was a decision made at that level that teachers and staff would not address the student using his male name or use male pronouns.

Apparently compassion and respect for transgender people is against Catholic catechism.

We wanted to make sure they would realize we still recognize her as a female, call her by the name she used when she enrolled as a freshman, and treat her throughout the day as a female student.

--Worland

The student has attended Cathedral High anyway. ?On National Coming Out Day last Thursday, a host of Cathedral High seniors voiced their support. ?Twitter and Facebook accounts were abuzz with stories of the school's behavior.
I probably met with over a hundred of our seniors over this.

--Worland

Worland claims that he explained to the students that the school's stance was rooted in the Catholic Church's teachings that say that changing one's gender is wrong. ?Worland did not go as far as to explain why.
I felt like at the end of the day the students were much more understanding of the school's view.

--Worland

You wish.

Anonymous student comments:

As a student at cathedral I believe that the administration is taking this way too far. Sending students home for supporting a classmate is ridiculous. On a daily basis we are told by the administration to "be yourself" and accept yourself for who you are, but they won't even give him a chance to do that. When it comes down to it cathedral doesn't really care about us, it just has a name to uphold.
He is my best friend and I will always support him. ?It's completely and utterly ridiculous. ?The day consisted of the administration freaking out over small pieces of adhesive paper. ?All we were doing was showing our support for him. ?I've been asking over and over again why Cathedral takes direction from the Archdioses [sic] when we are NOT affiliated with them. ?We do not receive money from them. ?The only reason I have been given is that they have control over our Catholic title. ?My question is why do they have control over our title?

All in all, I love ya, man. We are all behind you. :)

Fall is the Perfect Time to Plan for Winter - Oakley Home Builders

The fall Equinox is a good time of year to start thinking about preparing your home for winter, because as temperatures begin to dip, your home will require maintenance to keep it in tip-top shape through the winter.

Autumn is invariably a prelude to falling winter temperatures, regardless of where you live. It might rain, snow or barely reach freezing, but it's always a good idea to be prepared.
With heating costs expected to rise this year, properly winterizing your home could save money on lower heating bills and eliminate costly damage to the house from the elements.

?The most important things are to check for leaks around the house and make sure your heating is as efficient as it can be for the house,? says Steve Sobkowiak, Co-Owner of Oakley Home Builders. He recommends inspecting your home and making requisite repairs now before that first snowstorm.

"Also a good idea," added Ryan Dunham, Co-Owner of Oakley Home Builders, "Look at your roof from a distance to see if there are any shingles that are missing, aren?t lying flat or have curled corners. ?Fixing shingles now can help a roof last up to five years longer and prevent a bigger headache come spring?shingles protect the roof from water and moisture and prevent roof rot and leaks."

Study puts Romney tax plan in qustion | Concord Monitor

Repealing all itemized deductions in the U.S. tax code would pay for only a 4 percent cut in income tax rates, according to an estimate from the nonpartisan scorekeeper for Congress that casts doubt on Republicans' ability to finance lower income-tax rates with base broadening.

The analysis by the Joint Committee on Taxation shows the arithmetical difficulty of an approach that assumes long-favored tax breaks such as deductions for mortgage interest and charitable contributions could be repealed instantly and completely. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney proposes a 20 percent income tax cut and says he would pay for it by limiting tax deductions, credits and exemptions.

There are some important differences between Romney's approach and the JCT analysis that make it difficult to compare the 4 percent finding in the study with Romney's promise of a 20 percent tax cut. Much of the base broadening in the analysis pays for some changes that Romney assumes in his starting point and for policies from the 2009 stimulus law that he may not want to extend. That means he would be able to use the changes to deductions to cut rates by more than 4 percent.

"This JCT study is but one analysis of one hypothetical tax reform option," Antonia Ferrier, a spokeswoman for Sen. Orrin Hatch, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said in an emailed statement. "Those who seek to use the study to kill tax reform efforts should be accountable for the defects of the current system."

The estimate also assumes that the George W. Bush-era tax cuts would expire Dec. 31 for all income levels, meaning that the starting point for the analysis presumes a tax increase that neither party supports. Thus, the top rate achieved under the analysis would be 38.02 percent.

In the approach in the JCT analysis, the base broadening also pays for repealing the alternative minimum tax and extending provisions of the child tax credit and earned income tax credit. The approach assumes that capital gains would be taxed as ordinary income, which under some analyses might actually cost the government money.

The estimates are contained in an Oct. 11 letter from the Joint Committee on Taxation to Hatch of Utah and Sen. Max Baucus of Montana, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. The letter was obtained by Bloomberg News.

Thomas Barthold of the Joint Committee on Taxation described the estimate as an "experiment" that his staff conducted and said it doesn't represent all of the possible broadening of the tax base.

Under this approach, many tax breaks wouldn't be affected, including the exclusion of employer-sponsored health insurance, the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit.

"There are a significant number of other identified individual income tax expenditures or other possible base-broadening policies that I did not include in this experiment," Barthold wrote.

The report includes a set of tables that estimate how the combination of tax-policy changes, including taxing capital gains as ordinary income rather than at preferential rates, would affect taxpayers in different income levels.

In 2015, taxpayers making between $75,000 and $100,000 a year would see their federal taxes reduced by 0.8 percent. Taxpayers making more than $1 million would pay 5.7 percent more than they would otherwise.

EU moves closer to substantial new Iran sanctions

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union provisionally approved substantial new economic sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program on Friday, with senior diplomats giving their backing to measures against Tehran's banking sector and industry.

The new sanctions will have to be formally approved on Monday at an EU foreign ministers' meeting in Luxembourg before coming to effect.

An EU diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the new measures include a ban on financial transactions, with some exceptions for those involving humanitarian aid, food and medicine purchases. Some other types of trade may also be allowed.

EU states will also be banned from extending short-term guarantees for trade with Iran, importing natural gas from Iran and selling metals and graphites to Iran.

"Coreper (a committee of EU ambassadors) agreed the sanctions package on (the) Iranian nuclear program," said the diplomat in a message to Reuters.

The trade and finance measures mark a major step-up of European pressure on Tehran, amid growing concerns over its nuclear program, foundering diplomacy and threats of attack on Iranian atom installations by Israel.

Iran denies its atom work has any military intentions and says it wants nuclear power for electricity supplies and medical needs.

The EU is also targeting Iran's shipping industry, in an effort to curb Tehran's ability to sell oil to obtain funds and hard currency. It banned imports of Iranian oil earlier this year.

New measures will ban European companies from providing shipbuilding technology and oil storage capabilities, as well as flagging and classification services to Iranian tankers.

More sanctions are also being prepared in the United States.

Jonas Brothers' ?Wedding Bells?: Hear The Band Perform The New ...

The Jonas Brothers? hotly anticipated reunion show went down last night (October 11) at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and it was a doozy ? not only because of the deafening screams of thousands of teenage girls (which you could probably hear in New Jersey), but because the JoBros took the opportunity to debut some new music from their upcoming record. Apparently, they?ve been in the studio recording for the last six months. Who knew they had anything in the hopper besides Married to Jonas?

At any rate, a new song called ?Wedding Bells? immediately sparked speculation that the lyrics are about?Nick Jonas? relationship with?Miley Cyrus, who recently announced her engagement to new beau?Liam Hemsworth. Gasp!

After running through their biggest hits, the brothers Jonas performed a few of their new songs: Two uptempo jams, ?Let?s Go? and ?First Time,? followed by ?Wedding Bells,? which is a sweet, pensive ballad about still being in love with the one who?s about to get away. And all signs point to the song being about Miley: ?I don?t think I?ve ever written a song that makes me as uncomfortable as this song does,? Nick admitted while introducing ?Wedding Bells.? Also, we?re pretty sure that Cyrus is Jonas? only ex planning her nuptials, and the chorus lyrics ? ?I don?t want to love, if it?s not you / I don?t want to hear the wedding bells bloom / Maybe we can try one last time / But I don?t want to hear the wedding bells chime? ? are far from subtle.

?She says, ?Can you keep a secret / A ceremony?s set for June / I know it?s a rush, but I just love him so much / I hope that you can meet him soon.?? That seems like what Miley would say, right? Hear the song above.

Two Cultures and Entertainment

Entertainment in any culture is an important aspect to maintaining a healthy community. Whether the entertainment is used to bring about social or governmental change, is used as a form of instruction, or if it is simply used for escapism and enjoyment, the importance cannot be denied.

China is a country with a dramatic history, splendid culture, beautiful mountains and rivers and a large number of ethnic groups. Entertainments in China exemplify a perfect blend of modernity and cultural heritage. From traditional styles of dance and music to modern forms of theatre and art, the culture of China has always revolved around beauty, form and flow. Various historical forms of entertainment include opera, acrobatics, painting, sculpture, dance, music, poetry and theatre. The Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art and the Belz Private Collection are proud to present the artworks you see as not only a reflection of our interests, but as a visual example of all entertainment styles in China.

Family, community, synagogue and culture are the basis for a well-rounded Jewish lifestyle. These components have influenced all types of entertainment arts throughout history. Jewish music and dance, derived from Biblical tradition, have long been used by the Jewish as a medium for the expression of joy and other communal emotions. Jewish art and entertainment forms in various periods have also reflected the culture in which the artist or performers lived, and in modern times, the art has become more sophisticated, varied, and complex than ever before. Artists are finding the medium of Judaic objects to be a wonderful canvas to infuse tradition with an original eye. With this in mind, The Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art and the Belz Private Collection present the accompanying artworks as a testament to the fusion of the tradition and the change of the Jewish art culture.
