Marriage-saving tips for work-at-home couples

Earlier this month "Hitched" received a letter from a wife who works from home and asked for our help. After 31 years of marriage, she is struggling with her husband?s lack of respect for her workspace. He also began working from home and moved his computer into her office and now regularly interrupts her. The wife feels smothered and disrespected, and now she daydreams about getting her own apartment.

Rather than reply to just her with tips, I thought I?d share the information with all of you. While I have a lot of work-from-home experience, I gave a call to Diane Gottsman, owner of The Protocol School of Texas, a company specializing in etiquette training for corporations, universities and individuals

Define your workspace
Having a space of your own is extremely important, even if one of you has to work from the kitchen table. If possible, set up shop in two separate rooms on opposite sides of your home. Being in a separate space will help avoid distractions from your spouse, which can be as simple as their phone ringing throughout the day. If quarters are tight, Gottsman advises against butting two desks up against each other where you and your spouse are face to face, especially if you are doing your own projects for two different companies. The distractions it will likely cause will outweigh the benefits of the space saved.

If you don?t have a space large enough to accommodate both of you, establishing office hours may provide a fix.

    1. Family presses charges against 'neighbor from hell'

Kim and Greg Hoffman live on a quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac with their young daughters, where just across the street is a ...

    2. Girl, 11, is OK after fall from wall at Marlins game
    3. Jessica Simpson shares first photos of baby
    4. Duchess Kate makes her first Jubilee appearance
    5. Drink this, not that: Worst summer drinks

Create office hours
If you only have one room that can work comfortably as a home office, Gottsman says you might trade use of that room by creating work hours. For example, one might exclusively get the room from 8:00 to 1:00 and the other from 1:00 to 5:00. Gottsman says to negotiate the times that you truly need to be focused.

The second aspect of creating office hours is to let your spouse (and the rest of your family) know when you are not to be disturbed. You and your spouse can sync calendars on your smartphones to get on the same page. If you have kids, Gottsman suggests creating a physical calendar that they can see and placing it somewhere in a communal space.

Third, you have to establish a time to shut things down. ?We all have to create an end-time for our workday, whether that?s 5 o?clock or 6 o?clock,? says Gottsman. ?At some point we have to turn it off, close the laptop, walk away from the computer, silence our cell phone and spend time with each other.?

Communication
Dialogue with each other is paramount. ?You have to be able to talk to each other and really be honest without becoming defensive,? says Gottsman. Have a conversation where you explain what you need, when you need it and how these ground rules need to be followed going forward. ?It?s so important to be on the same page without becoming offended when your spouse can?t spend time with you,? says Gottsman.

If you would like to take advantage of being under the same roof during the day, Gottsman doesn?t think it would be outlandish to make appointments. For example, ?You could say, ?I know it?s a busy day for you, can we schedule a time later on where we can talk about how we?re going to get the kids to camp and who?s going to take Suzy to the soccer game,?? suggest Gottsman. You might not blatantly request an ?appointment,? but establishing specific times to take a break from work will keep you both focused and in the loop.

Dealing with distractions
This might be the biggest hurdle for most people working from home. ?We?ve gotten into the habit of being distracted,? says Gottsman. ?We now have to get into the habit of focusing on getting what we need to get done, taking our breaks, and at a certain point shutting down and being present with our spouse and with our friends.? This means you need to avoid pulling out the smartphone and taking a peak at Twitter, and likewise close the Facebook window.

When your husband or wife is just a few steps away, you need to respect each other?s space. You shouldn?t have to get off the phone to answer a question from our spouse, nor should they write you notes while you?re trying to conduct business. This gets back to communication, but you might try saying something along the lines of, ?I love you, I love you being here with me, but I?m easily distracted so could you help me out?? recommends Gottsman. So rather than scold your spouse for distracting you, you?ve flipped it and asked them for help.

Dealing with the family
Your boundaries should be very, very clear. ?We want to feel like what we?re doing is of value and that our spouse also values us,? says Gottsman. ?It may not seem as important, but if we?re doing it, it is important.? Your family needs to know they cannot walk in to your office and interrupt. When Gottsman absolutely cannot be disturbed and needs the rest of the house quiet while she takes an important call, she?ll put a sign on her door informing her family. Gottsman says you should have a conversation with your family that they are not to start the vacuum cleaner or blend a smoothie when they know you need a quiet backdrop.

Moreover, inform family members that you find it distracting if they stand next to you, breathing down your neck while you?re trying to get work done. It can be difficult with kids during the summer time when they?re home and need assistance, but establishing regular breaks when they know you?re available, and getting older siblings and your spouse to chip in will provide a big relief.

Of course, each household has their own schedules and specific needs. These are just a few guidelines for husbands and wives to follow when their office shares the same address.

?When you?re married, you have to look at all of these factors and figure out what works best for you, what works best under your own roof,? says Gottsman.

Know your legal rights in personal injury cases | My Paper Online

You?re a passenger in a friend?s car when it?s struck by a truck running a red light. Your child is bitten by the neighbor?s dog and requires a trip to the emergency room. You?re skiing at a well-known mountain resort when a snowboarder who was drinking hits you from behind and knocks you unconscious. You eat a hamburger at a local restaurant and later become seriously ill, the result of an E. coli bacterial infection.

Americans of all walks of life experience personal injuries every day ? many of them through no fault of their own. They just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. While most can recover from these injuries, the road to recovery is long for others. Some may never again be able to lead normal, healthy lives.

What should you do if you?ve been involved in an accident that left you with injuries? According to FindLaw.com, the nation?s leading source of free online legal information, people who have been injured should act quickly to ensure that their rights are protected and they receive fair compensation to pay for medical treatment and lost wages.

Here are some tips from FindLaw.com to keep in mind if you?re involved in an accident:

Seek medical help immediately. It?s important to seek medical help as soon as possible to recover from your injuries ? and to establish they were caused by the accident and not by a previous incident. Medical bills and receipts will be crucial in demonstrating the extent and nature of your injuries.

Call the police. Sometimes it?s critical to call legal authorities into a situation to not only provide immediate help, but also to establish a legal record of an accident or incident. For example, the neighbor?s dog gets off its leash and attacks your child, resulting in a trip to the emergency room where your child receives stitches. Filing a police report may be the right thing to do to protect your rights and prevent the dog from attacking another child in the future.

File an accident report. If you?re involved in a workplace accident ? either you were injured or were a witness to an accident ? file a report with the person responsible for a safe working environment. Following this procedure will be critical to creating a safer work environment, and to recovering compensation for injuries and lost wages.

Document the accident. If you or a loved one has been involved in an accident, it?s vital that you document what happened. The longer you wait, the greater the possibility that memories fade and physical evidence disappears. This involves writing down what you remember about the accident, identifying all possible witnesses and obtaining detailed observations from them about what happened, and preserving evidence that may be essential to proving your claim (including photos and video). The more information you have to lend credibility to your claims, the greater the chance you will be believed and recover compensation for the damages you suffered.

Find the instructions. Every year, thousands of Americans suffer personal injuries when using a product. If it happens to you, be sure to keep the item exactly as it was when the injury took place. You also should store any instructions, labels, warnings or packaging that came with the product in a safe place.

Contact a personal injury attorney. An experienced personal injury attorney can help determine if your case is strong enough to file a claim. In addition, a personal injury attorney can help evaluate any offers you may receive from the insurance company representing the person or company that may have injured you. To find a personal injury attorney in your area, consider using the attorney locator at FindLaw.com.

Keep track of the time. Every state has laws regarding time limits under which you can file a personal injury lawsuit. This is called the ?statute of limitations.? In some states, you may have only a year to file a lawsuit involving an auto accident. If you miss the deadline, your claims may be dismissed. That?s why it?s important to contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible after an accident.

Recognize that you may be at fault. There?s always a chance that you may be partially at fault in an accident. For example, if you were hit by a car while bicycling, you may be at fault if you did not follow the road regulations for cyclists in your state at the time of the accident. This could affect any compensation you may receive for your injuries. If it?s determined you were 50 percent at fault, for instance, your compensation may be reduced by that amount.

(AP) ? A weekend massacre of more than 100 people emerged as a potential turning point in the Syrian crisis Monday, galvanizing even staunch ally Russia to take an unusually hard line against President Bashar Assad's government.

Analysts said Russia may be warning Assad that he needs to change course or lose Moscow's support, which has been a key layer of protection for the Syrian government during the uprising that began in March 2011.

Russia has grown increasingly critical of Damascus in recent months, but Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's latest comments were unusually strong. Although he said opposition forces have terrorists among them, he put the blame for 15 months of carnage primarily on Assad's government.

"The government bears the main responsibility for what is going on," Lavrov said in Moscow following a meeting with British Foreign Secretary William Hague. "Any government in any country bears responsibility for the security of its citizens."

Alexei Malashenko, a Middle East expert with the Carnegie Moscow Center, said Lavrov's comments suggest Russia may be backing away from its long-standing support for Damascus.

"Bashar Assad is driving himself and Russia into a corner," Malashenko said. "Bashar has definitely gotten the sense that he may lose Russia's sympathy, and he may step back a bit."

It is not clear whether Assad's forces were exclusively to blame for the slaughter of 108 people Friday in Houla, a collection of poor farming villages in Homs province. The United Nations said 49 children and 34 women were among the dead; some had bullet holes through their heads.

The U.N. Security Council blamed Syrian forces for artillery and tank shelling of residential areas, but it did not clearly state who was responsible for the close-range shooting deaths and "severe physical abuse" of civilians.

Activists from the area said the army pounded the villages with artillery and clashed with local rebels. They said pro-government gunmen later stormed the area, doing the bulk of the killing by gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

The Syrian government rejected that account entirely, saying soldiers were attacked in their bases and fought back in self-defense without leaving their bases.

Russia blamed both the government and the rebels for the Houla massacre.

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children," Lavrov said. "This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by the government troops."

He said Russia has no interest in propping up Assad but wants Syria to guide its own transition under a plan brokered by special envoy Kofi Annan.

"We don't support the Syrian government; we support Kofi Annan's plan," Lavrov said.

Moscow's pro-Syria stance has been motivated in part by its strategic and defense ties to Damascus, including weapons sales. Russia also rejects what it sees as a world order dominated by the U.S.

Losing Russian support could be disastrous for Assad because his crackdown has left him almost completely isolated internationally. Russia and China have stood by him so far, using their veto power to block U.N. resolutions against him.

Hilal Khashan, a political science professor at the American University of Beirut, said the Houla massacre appears to be ushering in a change in Russia's position.

"There is a shift and the momentum against the regime is gathering," Khashan said. "The momentum is building and the Russians are not blocking the rising momentum."

The Syrian conflict is among the most explosive of the Arab Spring, in part because of Syria's allegiances to powerful forces, including Lebanon's Hezbollah and Shiite powerhouse Iran.

Activists say as many as 12,000 people have been killed since the uprising began. The U.N. put the toll as of March, a year into the uprising, at 9,000, but many hundreds more have died since.

Annan's peace plan, which calls for a cease-fire and dialogue, has been faltering for weeks. But Western leaders have pinned their hopes on his diplomatic pressure, since the U.S. and others are unwilling to get deeply involved in another Arab nation in turmoil.

Annan arrived in Damascus on Monday for talks with Assad and other officials and called on "every individual with a gun" in Syria to lay down arms, saying he was horrified by the Houla massacre.

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Holland spoke on the phone and expressed their desire to work with Russia to resolve the crisis in Syria. A British spokeswoman said Cameron and Hollande agreed to act together to "bring an end to the bloody suppression of the Syrian people."

Activists reported fresh violence Monday, saying troops shelled several neighborhoods in Hama, killing at least 24 people.

TROUT

DEEP?s spring trout stocking season is winding down. Trout stocking in western CT finishes this week and eastern CT stockings finish up next week.

Rivers & streams ? Conditions should be good for this weekend. Flows are generally moderate and comfortable for fishing, the weekend forecast is for ?summertime? weather, and there are still plenty of recently stocked trout waiting for anglers in many places.

Fishing has been good in a number of areas throughout the state, with the best reports from the West Branch and mainstem Farmington River (very good, a number of 3-4 lb trout among the catches), Salmon River, Mill River (Hamden), Housatonic River, Pootatuck River, East Aspetuck River (29 fish), Pequonnock River and Norwalk River (a 6 lb Rainbow among the catches, really good near the YMCA in Wilton). Some action also reported from the Willimantic River, Natchaug River, Hammonassett River, Shetucket River, Naugatuck River, Mt. Hope River and Eightmile River.

Farmington River ? Fishing has been very good (with a number of 3-4 lb trout being caught) and conditions should be comfortable for fishing this weekend. Flows are currently clear and moderate (294 cfs at Riverton, plus an additional 161 cfs from the Still River) and water temperatures are in the low to mid 50?s?F.

Hatches include Blue Winged Olive (#16-22), Blue Quills (#18-20) [a.k.a. paralep], Tan Caddis (#16-18), Sulphur (#16-20) [a.k.a. Vitreus] (ending) and March Browns (#10-12). Anglers can expect fly fishing to become a challenge as the hatches are shifting. Patterns working include Blue Wing Olives (#18-20, mid-late afternoon), Caddis (tan #14-18, all day) and Midges (#22-28) are the current patterns working. Hendricksons (#12-14, 4-6 pm.) and nymphing are both producing well.

Housatonic River ? Trout fishing was good to very good last week, and conditions should also be good for this weekend. Flows are clear, moderate and very fishable, currently 1,030 cfs at Falls Village and 1,480 cfs at Gaylordsville. Morning water temperatures are in the mid to upper 50?s ?F (TMA area).

Current hatches include Green Caddis (started this week, mornings & evenings) and Brown/Tan Caddis (#14-18). Successful flies include March Browns (#10-12, 4pm to dark) & Gray Foxes (#12-14), Green caddis (#14-18, early morning & evening), Sulphurs (#16), Isonychia (#10-12), Blue Wing Olives (#18-20). Midges (#22-26) are being seen at the mouths of tributaries. Golden Stoneflies (#6) were being hit hard early this week.

Rivers and streams stocking update (week of 5/21-5/25). MARINE FISHING REPORT
Surface water temperatures in Long Island Sound (LIS) range from the mid 50?s to low 60?s ?F. Check out the follwing web sites for more detailed water temperatures and marine boating conditions:
http://www.mysound.uconn.edu/stationstat.html

http://marine.rutgers.edu/mrs/sat_data/?nothumbs=1?

http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/AN/330.html

STRIPED BASS fishing is good throughout LIS. Squid are abundant in eastern LIS while schools of bunker (Atlantic menhaden) are in western LIS. Live lining bunker or eels on three-way rigs or fish finder rigs is the ticket. Just remember to use circle hooks to avoid gut hooking. Striper spots include Watch Hill reefs to eastern tip of Fishers Island, the Race, Plum Gut, Millstone outflow, outer Bartlett Reef, Black Point, lower Connecticut River (DEP fishing pier) and along Great Island, Long Sand Shoal, Southwest Reef, Six Mile Reef, Falkner Island area, Thimble Islands to the Branford Reefs, New Haven Harbor (including Sandy Point), Milford Harbor breakwaters and Charles Island area including the tombolo, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground, Housatonic River (up to the Derby Dam), Penfield Reef, around the Norwalk Islands, and the reefs off Stamford and Greenwich.

BLUEFISH fishing is better in western LIS with fish weighing in the double digits being reported. Bluefish spots include the Race, Millstone outflow, Plum Gut, Gardiners Bay, New Haven Harbor (Sandy Point), buoys 18 and 20 off Stratford Point, Stratford Shoal/Middle Ground, Penfield Reef, and the Norwalk Islands.

SUMMER FLOUNDER (fluke) fishing is good. The north side of Long Island from Horton Point over to Port Jefferson has been yielding big numbers but most are sub-legal size fish. Other spots include the south side of Fishers Island, Black Point/Niantic Bay, Westbrook-Clinton area, and off the New Haven breakwaters.

WINTER FLOUNDER can still be caught in the Pine Island area (Groton) and Niantic Bay. Just as a reminder, the winter flounder fishing season closes May 31.

COMMON CARP
A new state record common carp was caught by Michael Hudak (East Hartford, CT) on 5/16/2012 in the Hartford area of the Connecticut River during a night fishing trip. The fish was brought in on maize presented on the bottom. Michael had recently attended a carp fishing seminar put on by a local tackle shop and had gained some valuable experience fishing with other carp enthusiasts.
Many carp fishing enthusiasts are dedicated catch-and-release anglers and put returning the fish in good condition at the top of their priority list. Upon recognizing that he had a rather outstanding catch, Michael contacted a fellow carp angler who responded, complete with a CAG Limited (Carp Angler Group ? a national carp fishing organization) state certified scale, and weighed the fish at the water?s edge. The new state record was then released back into the Connecticut River.

?

For Current Connecticut Recreational Fishing Regulations: Anglers should consult the new 2012 Connecticut Anglers Guide which is now available at most Town Clerks Offices, DEEP offices and at tackle stores selling fishing licenses. Anglers can purchase their fishing licenses online (www.ct.gov/deep/fishinglicense) or at participating town halls, DEEP field offices and fishing tackle vendors. Current regulations, electronic versions of the Angler?s Guide and additional information can all be accessed on the DEEP website at: www.ct.gov/deep/fishing .

Game Capture HD ? Don't Miss a Moment ? Coolest Gadgets

    by Julie - on May 28th, 2012

I?m sure its no surprise that I?m a huge fan of video games. It?s not uncommon to find me on a caffeinated beverage bender up all night playing Halo or some other first person shooter game and talking to myself. Problem is, when you?re up all night, no one gets to see the action but you? and no matter how I try and explain?my?overnight dealings with the Covenant, my stories never seem to do it justice.

Meet Elagato?s Game Capture HD and never miss?being able to replay another?Banshee invasion.?The Game Capture HD is a cool, standalone HD video capture box, which will allow you to?record PS3 or Xbox 360 HD gameplays to an internal or an external hard drive, all without a PC.?

Recording your Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii gaming accomplishments is now a pretty simple task. All you need to do is connect the Game Capture HD to your game console with the included component cables, and all the action is yours to keep! One Click and the Game Capture HD lets you record, and preview live game footage in 1080i resolution, or just take screenshots during live action, or even during playback.

Your recordings and screenshots can be moved between connected drives for portability and sharing with friends and family. (you know, the ones that went to bed) and the unit comes with a built in 2.5? HDD slot, a remote control, component cable, RCA audio cable and a power adaptor. Please visit Newegg.com for videos or information, or to purchase Game Capture HD for under 140 bucks. I?m pretty sure I dated myself with the Halo reference?do people even play Halo anymore?

    Cooking with an iPad

    Sidewalk Shoes iPad

See this?? This is how you?ll find me cooking a lot of the time now.? When I got my iPad, I didn?t even think about using it for cooking.? But then I saw that I can get a subscription to Donna Hay magazine on my iPad for a fraction of the cost to have it shipped here to the US.?

Then I realized that I didn?t have to print off recipes any more, I could just prop up my iPad on my counter and work with it right there on the screen.

You can?t tell from the photo, but Pandora is also running in the background, and I am ?Walkin After Midnight? with Patsy Cline while I cook dinner.

    Love it.

(SkyNewswire.com) Samsung Galaxy S3, 2012 most eagerly awaited android phone is coming. This elegant Smartphone features impressive 4.8 inch Super AMOLED Capacitive multi-touch HD display that truly promises to make your world wider. It?s a really big phone but it?s comfortable to hold.

If you?ve put your hands onto it, do some personal settings on it is necessary. Setting a personalized ringtone for your Galaxy S3 will also be the priority especially for some young people. I believe some users will want to make a ringtone for Galaxy S3.

Firstly, please make sure your PC running 2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7, and copy or transfer your MP3s to PC. Then you should download a top Video to Galaxy S3 Converter, here I take Brorsoft Video Converter as an eample. Because it is based on NVIDIA CUDA& AMD APP(ATI Stream) Technologies, which can hep you transcode WMA, M4A, OGG, MKA to MP3 for Galaxy S3 at super fast speed if you have some audio files in other format like WMA, M4A, OGG that Galaxy S3 cannot support follow the bellow three steps.

Step 1: Launch Galaxy S3 Video Converter- the best Galaxy S3 Video Ringtone Maker and click the button for adding to import the WMA, M4A, OGG, MKA audio files to it.

Step 2: Tap the ?Format? option, move your pointer to ?Common Audio? set the ?MP3-MPEG Layer-3 Audio(*.mp3)? as the output format. And then set the output folder as you want.

Step 3: Click the ?Convert? button; it will start convert the conversion immediately.

Click to see original Image in a new window

After the easy conversion, you can get the output MP3 files for your Galaxy S3, and add WMA, M4A, OGG, MKA MP3 to Galaxy S3 to make a personalized ringtone as the follow parts.

    SMS ringtone:
Create a folder in your SD card notifications folder and save mp3 files on it. Then go to message settings, select ringtone. You should be able to find the saved file there since it has been saved on the notifications folder.

    Incoming Calls ringtone:
You can assign a video ringtone to a specific contact. Transfer your MP3 files to Galaxy S3(It can be saved in the Music Library) And you have to have the contact saved to your "Phone". If it?s saved to the SIM card just find the contact and click hold it until it brings up the options. Click "Copy to phone". Delete the SIM card version of the contact. Go into the newly saved "Phone" contact and click "Edit". When you scroll down you will see the option to select the MP3 as a personlized ringtone as you like.

    Tricks:
Most of the time, you do not want to set the whole MP3 as the ringtone. You may just need a part of it, probably the chorus of a song. In that case, you need to trim it, and get the wanted part. Fortunately, Galaxy S3 Video Converter as the best Galaxy S3 Video Ringtone Maker can also do you a favor:

    1. Run the Galaxy S3 Video Ringtone Maker and import your MP3 files.

    2. Click the edit button and tap the ?Trim? icon, and then drag the process bar to the trim points to get your wanted part of the MP3. You can find the exact start time and end time in the ?Start? and ?End? boxes. Finally click the ?OK? icon to confirm.

Click to see original Image in a new window

    3. Set the ?MP3-MPEG Layer-3 Audio(*.mp3)? as the output format.

    4. Click the convert button to start the conversion. Now, get the output files, you can custom ringtones for Galaxy S3.
