India launches GPSlike IRNSS1A satellite, aims to complete system by 2016

India will soon have a positioning system of its own. Much like our own GPS, the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) is scheduled to provide location information to civilians and government users alike, with a position accuracy of 20 meters or better. Seven satellites will make up IRNSS, including three in geostationary orbit and four in inclined geosynchronous orbit, which will rotate with the Earth. GPS currently covers the Indian subcontinent, as it does the rest of the world -- like GLONASS in Russia and BeiDou in China, IRNSS will provide additional utility to users within 1,500 kilometers of the Indian mainland. It's expected to come online by 2016.

Hitler's food taster feared death with every morsel

By Michelle Martin

BERLIN (Reuters) - Margot Woelk spent the last few years of World War Two eating lavish meals and fearing that every mouthful could mean death.

The former food taster for Adolf Hitler was served a plate of food and forced to eat it between 11 and 12 every morning for most of the last 2-1/2 years of the Nazi German leader's life.

If she did not fall ill, the food was packed into boxes and taken to Hitler at the Wolf's Lair, a military headquarters located deep in woodland, in what is today northeastern Poland.

"Hitler was a vegetarian so it was all vegetarian fare - it was very good food like white asparagus, wonderful fruits, peppers and cauliflower," the 96-year-old Berliner told Reuters.

Along with 14 other girls in their 20s, Woelk lived in fear that every meal she ate would be her last.

"We were always terrified that the food might be poisoned as England wanted to poison Hitler and he knew that from his spies so he employed young girls to taste his food," she said.

"We cried a lot and hugged each other. We asked each other: 'Will we still be alive tomorrow or not?'"

Woelk, who still has nightmares about her role as a food taster and did not speak about her experiences for decades after the war, said she and her family were against the Nazis and that she landed the job "through a series of coincidences".

Forced to leave her apartment in Berlin when allied bombing made it uninhabitable, Woelk gave up her secretarial job and moved in with her parents-in-law in the village of Gross-Partsch, then in eastern Germany and now part of Poland.

"The mayor there was a big Nazi and he had connections with the SS (a Nazi paramilitary organization) so I was forced into it right away. I had to work to earn money," she said.

She said she never saw Hitler, though she did see his dog.

Woelk said she heard the explosion on July 20, 1944 caused by a bomb that army generals had planted at the Wolf's Lair with the aim of taking Hitler's life.

At the time Woelk was watching a film with soldiers in a tent not far from the military headquarters.

"We heard this huge bang then we fell off the wooden benches we were sitting on. Someone shouted 'Hitler is dead' but we later found out that only his hand was injured."

After the failed assassination attempt, Woelk said she had to move into supervised accommodation and was held like a prisoner, denied access to a telephone and able to visit her parents-in-law only with SS officers as chaperones.

When Hitler killed himself in April 1945, Woelk fled to Berlin and went into hiding. Soviet forces were closing in on the German capital and Woelk was later pulled out of an air raid shelter and raped by Russian soldiers for a fortnight.

The other 14 food tasters who had stayed behind were all killed, she said.

After the war Woelk started a job in pension insurance and was surprised when her husband, in Russian captivity and presumed dead, turned up unexpectedly. She had not heard from him in two years and did not recognize him.

"I've had a life full of drama and now, at the age of 96, I'm back living in the same house I lived in before the war."

Gitmo detainees on hunger strike sue over forced feeding

Four inmates at the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba are suing the federal government over the camp's force-feeding procedures, arguing they are inhumane and violate the inmates' freedom of religion.

The inmates?two of whom are currently on a monthslong hunger strike and are being force-fed?are suing in federal court in Washington, D.C., for an injunction that would stop the U.S. military from feeding inmates against their will.

Previous court rulings have held that U.S. prisoners may be force-fed to prevent them from effectively taking their own lives by starvation. But lawyers for the detainees argue that because they have not been charged with a crime, there is no "legitimate penological interest" in force-feeding them to prolong their indefinite detention. The United Nations and the World Medical Association, however, have said force-feeding is inhumane and that prisoners who are mentally fit should be allowed to refuse food. More than 40 prisoners are being force-fed now, with 106 total on hunger strike. President Barack Obama suggested in a national security speech last month that the forced feeding was unjust and that he would renew efforts to close Guantanamo.

Interestingly, the detainees' lawyers are also asking the court to reconsider whether certain religious protections extend to foreign nationals held outside the United States, given the expanded definition of personhood put forward in the Supreme Court's 2010 decision in Citizens United v. FEC. The detainees argue that they should be allowed to fast for the holy month of Ramadan, which begins July 8. The prisoners say the forced feeding will violate their ability to observe fasting for Ramadan under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Previous court rulings have suggested the act's protections do not extend to "nonresident aliens," but the detainees' attorneys argue that the courts should reconsider that precedent under the Citizens United decision, which dealt with freedom of speech and political contributions.

It's unclear whether the district court will buy the lawyers' argument that it should take the case, because the government has argued in the past that civilian judges have no jurisdiction over the prison. The court has given the government two days to respond to the filing.

Ahmed Belbacha, a 43-year-old Algerian inmate who was suspected of belonging to an al-Qaida unit in Pakistan, is one of the four who is suing. "I accept [the risk of starvation] because hunger striking is the sole peaceful means that I have to protest my indefinite detention," he says, according to the U.K. human rights group Reprieve and the California-based lawyer Jon Eisenberg, who filed the court papers on their behalf. ?I realize the consequences of ending the force feeding regime. Understanding this, I ask the Court to stop the prison authorities from force feeding and forcibly medicating me."

Belbacha notes that he has been held without charge since 2002, and was cleared for release in 2007 and again in 2009.

Another detainee, Abu Wa?el (Jihad) Dhiab from Syria, described in the filing the force-feeding procedure. ?Straps and shackles are put in place and only the chains on the hands are released," Dhiab said. "Then all the straps are tightened forcefully so that I cannot move or breathe. In addition to this, there are six riot force members: one holding the head and putting his fingers on the throat and neck from below the chin with severe pressure, the second and third hold the hands, the fourth and fifth hold the legs, and then the nurse inserts the tube. If you are in pain it is natural for your head to move, so they shout 'don't resist.'"

Congress has passed legislation to prevent civilian or military trials at Guantanamo. Even though 86 of the remaining 166 detainees at Gitmo have been cleared for release, many of their home countries will not accept them. All four inmates who are suing the government have been cleared for release from the camp.
