On those two or three occasions per year when the folks at GQ decide to chime in on football, my initial reaction is (to borrow a phrase from Brandon Jacobs) ?stay cute and shut up.?? Most of the time, however, there?s something in there worth repeating.

Especially when the author is our good friend Michael Silver.? Who has rarely been called ?cute? and who even more rarely shuts up.

Silver has compiled an ?oral history? of Tim Tebow.? Since I?m finally forcing myself to trudge through the clumsy, narrative-challenged oral history of ESPN, I was prepared to ping-pong from quote to quote in the hopes of trying to find something instructive and/or entertaining from the broader item.

The new quotes loosely track Tebow?s first almost-full season as a starter.? Here are the ones that stuck out.? For those of you who received your ?I read the 750 pages of the ESPN book and all I got was this lousy T-shirt? T-shirts, it?ll be a snap (relatively speaking) to breeze through the whole thing.

Vikings defensive end Jared Allen has the most insightful comment of anyone.? (Yes, that?s the first time that specific sentence has ever been uttered in all of human history.)? ?You know what the coolest part about the whole thing is?? Allen says.? ?And the reason people hate it?? Because it?s showing that the conventional wisdom of coaches isn?t really necessary.? You know, coaches always think they have the winning theory: ?Our way is the right way!? Blah blah blah!?? Well, here?s a dude that they basically had to scrap the whole offense for and go back to running a college [system].? And they have been successful with it.? Sometimes people think the game is more difficult than it is.? If you find something that works, go with it.? And I don?t really think it has to be a nine-syllable frickin? play.?

ESPN?s Trent Dilfer wades gingerly, until the last part, into the murky waters of the religious aspect of Tebowmania.? ?I don?t have a problem with what Tim Tebow?s doing with [his outspoken Christianity]. I?ve seen him try to articulate why he has the belief and why he believes the things he does, in a very easy way to understand.? He?s not the guy, when the cameras are put in his face, saying, you know, ?Praise to God, because he supernaturally let that ball hit my receiver!?? You know what I mean?? But he?s up-front with it, and he makes many people uncomfortable.? I do have a problem with what the Christian community is doing with his faith, that they are almost becoming a cult following.? I think it?s an ?us? problem, not a ?him? problem.?

Dilfer ultimately is right.? Tebow never has tried to suggest that there?s an Angels in the Outfield component to his success.? But others ? and there are many, and they are zealous ? firmly believe that something more than human is making good things happen for Tebow and the Broncos.? (Except, of course, when they play the Patriots.)

It doesn?t help that guys like Kurt Warner are trying to make the Tebow story into a real-life David-and-Goliath tale.? ?To me, it?s a biblical story,? Warner explains.? ?That?s what the Bible?s full of: ordinary guys who are able to accomplish extraordinary things, not by their own strength and might but by God?s hands coming with them.? And I think it?s very similar to my story and what people took from me going from a grocery-store clerk to a Super Bowl champion.?

The difference between Warner and Tebow is that Warner ultimately got a chance to demonstrate his abilities as a high-level passer.? Tebow is succeeding without those skills, and he?s desperately trying to establish them in order to keep his job.? That?s what V.P. of football operations John Elway wants to see.

?I get encouraged when I see him working within the system and throwing on time, with good feet. That, to me, is where he?s getting better,? Elway says.? ?Consistency and accuracy is gonna come when he gets consistent with his feet.? It?s like a pitcher: The front foot comes down on the same spot every single time. He?s just never really worked on that.?

Former teammate Brandon Lloyd, when asked what Tebow needs to do to become an elite passer on Monday?s PFT Live, had a slightly different focus.? ?I think that what he needs to do is what every quarterback does,? Lloyd said.? ?It?s about the classroom when it comes to being a quarterback.? Understanding how defenses are covering the offense versus the plays and routes that are being run is over half the battle, because then you can have that anticipation and that timing and then you?re not guessing where you?re throwing the ball. . . .? It?s the ability to understand what the defense is doing when you?re going under center on that particular play and understanding the grand scheme of what they?re trying to do to stop you.?

Regardless of what Tebow needs to do to get there, Elway knows that, if Tebow can, everyone in the organization will benefit.

?He has changed the culture of that locker room. The way he handles his life, the way he is with people, the way he is with media ? everybody wants to fight over what he is on the football field, but for the NFL, for the Denver Broncos, he?s perfect,? Elway says.? ?He?s a great kid.? You know, people want him to be successful.? And so do I.? Everybody in this building does, too. If he?s the guy that can be our guy for ten, fifteen years, that?s a hell of a deal for us.?

Elway should rethink calling it a ?hell? of a deal.? Unless, of course, the only way Tebow can ever get to where he needs to be entails doing a deal with the devil.? And/or Don Draper.

China's unofficial lending falters, savers protest

BEIJING (AP) ? Ms. Zhang, a schoolteacher in the central city of Anyang, lent $43,000 last year to entrepreneurs who couldn't get loans from state banks. Now as growth cools and Beijing cracks down on informal credit, Zhang and thousands of other small lenders are unpaid and angry.

Underground lending by ordinary Chinese like Zhang flourished over the past decade, providing trillions of yuan (hundreds of billions of dollars) needed by private companies that create China's new jobs and wealth.

Its popularity reflects public desperation for an alternative to China's banks, which pay low deposit rates that fail to keep up with inflation and channel savings to government companies.

But the high cost of underground credit ? interest rates of 70 percent a year or higher ? and a slump in global demand caused a wave of business failures last year, prompting owners in cities such as Wenzhou in the southeast to flee.

The shockwave is now hitting the Chinese savers who put up money for those loans. Protests erupted in Anyang and other areas as lenders demanded officials get back their money.

"We have no other investment options and bank interest rates are too low," said Zhang, who asked not to be identified further. Hopes of getting back the 270,000 yuan ($43,000) she lent are pinned on the courts so long as the government is willing to let a case proceed.

Rising defaults threaten to aggravate social tensions as the Communist Party tries to enforce calm ahead of a once-a-decade handover of power to a younger generation of leaders due late this year. The public already is fuming over inflation, corruption, product safety scandals and pollution.

Leaders including Premier Wen Jiabao, the top economic official, have repeatedly promised more credit for small companies. But most loans still go to state enterprises that have close ties with banks and form the power base of officials. Experts say there have been slight improvements but the situation hasn't changed fundamentally.

"It always has been hard for small Chinese companies to borrow money from banks," said Guo Tianyong, director of the Banking Research Center at Beijing's Central University of Finance and Economics. He said the situation has worsened in the past year.

Entrepreneurs were struggling with slumping global demand when Beijing clamped down on a credit boom to cool its overheated economy. State banks cut the small amount of private sector lending they were doing while continuing support to state industry. Private companies failed and the survivors cut payrolls.

Only 19 percent of bank lending last year went to small businesses, while total loans fell 6 percent from 2010 to 7.5 trillion yuan ($1.2 trillion), according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

The underground credit market is estimated by China's central bank and private sector analysts at 2 to 4 trillion yuan ($325 to $650 billion), or as much as 7 percent of total lending. In some areas, informal lending exceeds that of official banks.

The communist government allowed it to grow over the past decade, apparently seeing it as necessary to support entrepreneurs.

Borrowers range from manufacturers and traders to real estate developers who want to evade credit curbs imposed to cool surging housing prices. Middlemen, some of them state companies, put borrowers in touch with lenders for a fee.

Yao Yafei, a manager of a chemical company with 20 employees in the central city of Linfen in Shanxi province, said it has used informal lenders since 2004. He said that in its latest round, the company borrowed 500,000 yuan ($80,000) in July and repaid it two months later with 2 percent monthly interest.

"Underground banking is popular here," Yao said. "They offer really good service and send the money to you just one minute after you ask. They even send the cash to your place if you want.

Beijing launched a crackdown as it tightened economic controls after the 2008 crisis.

Regulators started to worry about underground lending after high returns drew state companies and civil servants into the business, blurring the line between banks and informal lending, according to Guo.

"They could easily borrow from banks and earn a profit by re-lending the money," he said. "If a problem happened, it would become destructive."

In Zhejiang province on the southeast coast, an export center hit by an avalanche of bankruptcies, 11 people have been sentenced to death since 2009 on charges of "illegal fundraising," according to news reports.

Among them was a 31-year-old woman, Wu Ying, who once was praised by state media as one of China's most successful businesswomen.

The penalty prompted an outcry on Internet bulletin boards by people who said it was too severe. All death sentences must be confirmed by China's supreme court, but in an apparent effort to mollify critics, the court took the unusual step of announcing it was reviewing Wu's penalty "with care."

Across the country, borrowers have been arrested after failing to repay loans running to billions of yuan (hundreds of millions of dollars).

Ordinary Chinese savers still have powerful incentives to take part.

Banks pay 3.5 percent on deposits, while inflation stood at 4.5 percent in January and was as high as 7.1 percent in July. Food prices are rising by double digits, adding to the urgency of earning a better return.

Zhang, the schoolteacher in Anyang in the central province of Henan, said she lent money last March to five local companies after friends put her in touch with the owners. She said such arrangements have been routine in Anyang for more than 10 years.

"There were no problems in the past two or three years, so people believed they could make money from it," she said by phone from Anyang.

The borrowers paid 4 percent interest each month but when the six-month loan came due in September, they said they had no money left, she said.

"It was just gone," Zhang said.

Thousands of frustrated lenders in Anyang took to the streets on New Year's Day, demanding the government recover their money, according to Hong Kong news reports.

Police blocked some who tried to board trains to Beijing to complain to the central government and authorities in Anyang are investigating hundreds of people suspected of involvement in investment schemes.

The propaganda department of Anyang's Communist Party branch said investigators have detained 160 people and recovered 1.8 billion yuan ($290 million) out of 4.6 billion yuan ($741 million) sought by lenders.

Chinese experts and state media say small-scale informal lending is legal and the limits of what is prohibited are fuzzy.

Xinhua said in a Dec. 16 report that making a private loan directly to a borrower is legal, though courts will not enforce interest more than four times the rate charged by official banks.

"There were differences between illegal fundraising and private lending, but no distinct boundaries were drawn," said Guo. "It's still not clear where the boundary is."

(Glen Cove, NY) Valentine?s Day rang in with warmth and joy this year as the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club celebrated the holiday with a festive day full of events for Club members. The event was held in the Club?s gymnasium on February 10th.

The day, which included games such as horse-shoes and a hockey shot, also involved the arts with face painting and water tattoos. Members competed against one another to beat the tricky inflatable obstacle course.

Throughout the month of February, the Clubs Torch Club sold loligrams for fellow club members and staff to purchase. Lolligrams were distributed at the event where Club members enjoyed pizza, ice pops and Valentine?s themed cotton candy. Before they left, each member was given a goodie back filled with toys and candy.

The Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club at Lincoln House has been serving the community since 1903 by providing a caring environment that will inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive and responsible citizens. The Club serves over 700 youths ages 6 to 18 in the Glen Cove community, providing them a safe place to go after the school day ends where they can participate in a variety of programs such as sports, recreation, education, dance, technology and art. Social Media: A Love Story ? Culture and Social Media Technologies

As I perused the Internet for the perfect article to analyze, I was disappointed with my findings.? All of the articles I encountered offered lists of reasons why social media would ruin relationships, and although it is true that relationships in the social media realm are not always rainbows and unicorns, I was determined to find an article that was more than a laundry list of social media?s detriments.

I then came across the article ?Tweeting Ur Luv on #Vday? and was instantly hooked by its playful title.? To my delight, the title was not the only impressive aspect of the article, for the text and embedded video were up to par as well.

I first watched the video titled Social Media Saves Valentine?s Day, which was produced by Socialnomics author Erik Qualman.? Although this video did demonstrate a failed relationship due to social media, it did it in a fun, exciting way, which actually highlighted many of the benefits of social media.? Because of the high-speed qualities and sense of community exemplified by social media, this man was able to pull off a Valentine?s Day that was too good.? This light and positive representation of social media continued throughout the article.

In addition to its optimistic approach, I also really enjoyed the article?s well roundedness.? Instead of focusing on one specific couple, writer Bob Strauss references couples that reconnected on Facebook, a single woman without a Facebook, Twitter feeds, and other online communities to portray social media?s affect on Valentine?s Day.

Strauss speaks of two couples that were old friends before reconnecting on Facebook that eventually turned into romantic partners.? Strauss emphasizes the importance of social media?s impact on sustaining these relationships, but what I would have liked to know more about was how the early reconnection had gone about.? Donath and boyd say in their article ?Public Displays of Connection?, ?the public display of connections found on networking sites should ensure honest, self-presentation because one?s connections are linked to one?s profile? (74 Donath and boyd).? How did these couples find each other on Facebook? Did they actively seek each other out or did they stumble upon one another by chance going through a mutual friend?s network?? Were the ways the other person was depicted on Facebook representative of the old friend they remembered, or were new aspects of this person?s identity on display for them to learn? I think it would have been interesting to know a little bit more about the beginning stages of these couples? interactions.

Strauss also presented a counterargument to social media?s relationship benefits by offering Amanda Taylor?s ?social media is the devil? opinion (Strauss 1).? Not only did I like the way this opinion downplayed the article?s optimistic skew, it also served as lead-in to a community of girls who are alone on Valentine?s Day, Single Girl Problems.? This Twitter feed perfectly demonstrates Baym?s attributes of online communities such as sense of space, shared practice, and shared identities.? It is a place where single girls who feel alone go to feel not so alone anymore.? They identify with each other while submitting their own ?single girl problems,? and gain emotional support within this social space, which Baym defines as,?the ability to turn to others for comfort and security during times of stress, leading the person to feel that he or she is cared for by other,? (Baym 83).? There is a ?shared sense of who ?we? are? and different users assume different roles, as I would assume there are definitely some ?lurkers? hanging around Single Girl Problems (Baym 86-87).? Strauss mentions other websites that typify Baym?s five characteristics of online communities such as, Cheaterville, Cupidville, and Karmaville as well.

As opposed to the film Life 2.0 this article presents its story with a much lighter connotation.? Life 2.0 dramatized each storyline it followed.? Whether the users were depicted as creepy, psychologically damaged, or even as part of a community, each scenario was seen as extreme.? This article is quite the opposite, showing a multifaceted view of social media.? One woman quoted in the article says, ?I use social media to say Happy Valentine?s to all of my friends and family,? but she also distributes candy to her co-workers because she, ?wants them to know that they have a real friend? (Strauss 1). The juxtaposition of using social media, and acknowledging her ?real? friends shows that there are no extremes depicted in this article.

After looking at all sides of the spectrum, the article has a slightly optimistic tone and seems to conclude social media has a positive affect on relationships by bringing people together.? Overall I think the article did a great job at assessing the situation from all angles?he examined different platforms, different types of relationships, and different outlooks?and left the reader with a substantial understanding of the different realms of social media and their affect on Valentine?s Day.

Relationship Issues and The Home Floor Plan ? LASAssociates's Blog

Yesterday I suggested that you explore your relationship blueprint based on what you experienced as a relational being throughout your life. Hopefully you were able to discover some areas where your thinking was a bit askew, and decided to continue the growth process?by re-designing or even creating a new? blueprint. I said that your home?s layout could be very helpful. In fact, it could be exceptionally helpful. Understanding how to find the area in the home that vibrational matches your present issues is the subject of this entry.

The ancient principles of Feng Shui are best suited to understand vibrational energy in our environment and how this energy interacts with our personal vibrational field.?The art and science of Feng shui?teaches that we are not separate from anything, least of all the houses we choose to dwell in.

Feng Shui has been used for thousands of years in the Orient to arrange the best spaces for living, working and burial siting. It is now widely used throughout the world and my company uses these principles in all the environments we create, with enormous success. A prominent tool used in applying Feng Shui is the energetic grid called the Bagua. This grid is used as a guideline to study how energy enters a space, how it travels through it and where specific vibrational areas are located that are stand-ins for nine life situations such as relationships, wealth, fame, family, creativity and children, career, benefactors and knowledge and spirituality. The center is where all the areas converge and it provides stability to the structure and its occupants. The center holds the balance and health of the occupants.

The Bagua grid is applied over the floor plan and aligned with the front door like a clock that can be stretched to match your shape-see picture, above. Your front door will always be located at the 7:00 o?clock, 6:00 o?clock or 5:00 o?clock quadrants. The 1:00 o?clock quadrant will always represent relationship energy. The other areas are arranged as drawn on the grid.

When a floor plan is irregular, or L-shape as shown in the picture, we say that it has a missing area or ?gua?, its Chinese name. A floor plan missing a gua is lacking the energy represented by that gua. If? in your personal exploration you found out that you had trouble attracting relationships, or keeping them, you may be missing the relationship gua just like the example shown. Your relationship with your mother may be strained, she may have died unhappy or you were crossed with her, and it may be difficult to have a good connection with your sisters. If you are a woman, you may feel unfulfilled, empty and unlovable. If you are a man, you are lacking balanced female energy.? You may not be able to hold on to relationships, and your relationship to women-mother, sister, friend, wife maybe unsatisfactory.

If that gua sticks out of the grid?s foot print, it may create an enhancement for the energy and life situation of that area. If it is in the relationship gua, you are likely to find fulfillment in most of your relationships.? When that enhancement is too large, then the energy is overpowering and it creates imbalances. Then the female has too much power, and men tend to be intimidated by it. If the Benefactors area sticks out, then the men will be too powerful and females will feel unrealized and unable to contribute.

Feng Shui principles correlate with all Asian healing systems. The relationship energy represents the energy of earth and it relates to women, mothers, nurturing, receptiveness, diversity, stability, cooperativeness and marriage, among other things. It also has to do with the abdomen, the stomach, digestive disorders and the upper spine. An imbalance in this area mirrors the same imbalance in the life of the home dweller.? You may be saving yourselves years of psychotherapy by uncovering these connections. It is worth noting that not all the occupants of the home will be experiencing the issues that the house presents to the same degree. Yet when the house is a vibrational match to one or more of the people?s personal energies, the effects are swiftly felt.

The houses that we inhabit do not create these life situations. We gravitate to these structures because of our personal energetic blueprint, or karmic path. Our dwellings simply reflect our vibrational map. When we select where to live, we make a choice that may very well be unconscious, but a choice nonetheless. Knowing how to read the energetic blueprint in our personal spaces allows us to focus on what does not function well in our lives and rejoice where all is well.

In the concluding entry I will be uncovering more of the issues presented by this floor plan and suggesting powerful adjustments to help you heal the imbalances in your life.

For tomorrow, I suggest you create a floor plan of your home and divide the space by?superimposing?a bagua grid over it, or nine equal areas. You may have a rectangle of a square. Label each nine guas and study what is going on in each of the corresponding areas of your home. You may be quite surprised at the findings!

Rihanna 'Birthday Cake' Cameo Will 'Shock The World'

It's one of the most-talked about songs on Rihanna's Talk That Talk, and it's barely a minute long. Now, "Birthday Cake" — 78 titillating seconds of school bells, handclaps and engines gunning — is set to get a full-length reboot. But according to co-producers Da Internz, the featured guest on the remix will be more than just icing.

"We got the Rihanna 'Birthday Cake' coming out in a week," a bespectacled Kosine told MTV News on the red carpet of the ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Brunch, held over the Grammy weekend.

"It's gonna be crazy," his production partner, Tuo, said shaking his head.

"And the feature on there is gonna shock the world," Kosine chimed in cryptically.

The interlude (board work by Da Internz and The-Dream) is among the saucier bits on Rihanna's sixth LP, with the titular confection serving as a metaphor for a region of the female anatomy. "I know you wanna bite this/ It's so enticing," Rih sings. "Nothing else like this, I'ma make you my bitch/ And it's not even my birthday / But you wanna put your name on it." A hypnotic chant on the word cake follows.

So would Da Internz offer up even a hint at the identity of this jaw-dropping guest feature?

"Nope, nope, not gonna be on my watch," Kosine said smiling but tight-lipped. "All I'm gonna say is stay tuned — it's dropping [this] week."

Tuo added that fans should also expect a clip for what stands to be an explosive track. "The visual has to go with it because everybody's going to be like, 'Oh my god!'

That left us wildly speculating, tossing around names in the MTV Newsroom. After some thought, we realized that buzzed-about artists who have organic connections to Rih, like onetime flame Drake or Roc Nation pal J. Cole, wouldn't exactly shock us by making an appearance on a Rihanna single. But what about Chris Brown, who was spotted last week exiting the same Hollywood recording studio as his fellow Grammy performer, Rihanna? Rumors quickly began to swirl that the exes were cooking up a duet.

A verse from Brown, the crooner indelibly tied to the Bajan beauty since their relationship imploded after a February 2009 assault? That would be shocking.
